I have heard that the Ballard grooved barrels are better for cast bullets and will still shoot jacketed bullets just as well. Correct me if this isn't right. That said, what I've been thinking is, get a Marlin 1895cb, have the barrel cut down 2-4" and mag. to 1/2 mag. and put receiver peep or fiber optic's on it to make it better handling in the field. What do ya'll think of this or has it been done? Thanks

I could just buy a newer jap Browning or Winchester 1886 carbine or rifle. I know some of you must have one. How do they shoot?

I shoot a 1895CB with a Skinner peep rear sight and a Lyman front globe.
I would not cut mine down
You really need to fondle the CB for a short time and see what there're like first :D

I like the CB for the straight grip, ballard rifling and longer barrel. After reading alot of post on the 1895's I find one thing in common with all who own one, no matter which version they have, short or long, straight or pistol grip, Ballard or Micro-Groove. They all love theirs. And most have more than one. So I don't think I can go wrong which ever one I choose. Thanks to all who posts here and all who make this site what it is.

Hi Mike, if you want one cut down, I'd say go for it. I have thought about doing just that with mine. A friend of mine has been thinking the same. I do find myself taking one of my shorter Marlins in the field because they are shorter and fit the insides of my Jeep better.

I wish they made a 20"-22" round barreled version of the CB. The CB is just too long & heavy for hunting.
