I am looking for aftermarket sights for my model 94. The original front sight broke and my rear sight got bent cockeyed on the rifle. Since I needed to replace them anyway, I thought that I would take the opportunity to replace them with a longer range sight.
I am looking for a rear sight that is like the old 1886 sights that will fit the rifle. It has the normal rear sight mounted on a flip up slide style extended range sight.
Has anyone found anything like this? is there anything I should know about installation?
Thanks!

Joshua,
Welcome to the forum.
Buffalo Arms has reproduction sights like that. Here is the link to that page, but you can go to their sight section and check out lots of choices.

The only advise I can give about replacing the sights is they come out from left to right as you hold the gun to shoot it.
Also sometimes you'll have to do some fitting to get the new sights to fit.

I mounted a Lyman 17AHB globe sight up front on my 94 and use the Willians FP in the rear. The sight picture is awesome - and you can switch to different sight inserts for target shooting or hunting.
You will have to trim a small "slice" from the front of the globe so that it will clear the barrel band->

The Williams FP

and the sight picture with my target ring insert... It's hard to photograph through the peep and looks much better "in person".

That is pretty slick. I have used those types of sights on various match rifles. They perform well.

Greetings
I was glad to see this post because I am in the same spot. My 94 was made in 1976 and is my primary deer gun. But, I need to do something about the rear sight. As I am getting older I am finding my eyes don't adjust real good with the original sight. I can still do fine with my M1 Garand and my Rem 541 X, both of which have rear peeps.
I am looking into installing one of the Williams sights. I think it is the 5D-94/36. Can anyone tell me if the 2 small screws on the left side of the receiver are for this purpose?
Also, If I lower the orginal sight to the lowest position, will I be able to use the Williams? Or will it be in the line of sight. I don't want to have to remove the original sight.
thanks in advance
Tom
Tom, yes, the two holes on the left side of the receiver are for the receiver sight. I am sure the rear sight will still be in the line of sight, but it is simple to drift it out and replace it with a sight blank.

Thanks Andy
I think I will get one and see how it works.
If I do end up needing to remove the orginal sight how do i remove it?
I am guessing just a tap to one side or another and lift it out? I have no clue. I will need to go take a look at it.
thanks
Tom
It really is easy to remove the rear sight. All you need is a small piece of paper under the sight elevator to protect the barrel from scratches, a small hammer and a brass punch. Tap the sight out of the barrel dovetail from left (non-loading gate) side to the right (loading gate) side. It doesn't take a lot of force, in my experience, start with light taps. Once the rear sight is out, tap the sight blank back in from right to left until centered. The sight blank may require a little fitting (filing/sanding) to fit, but should drive right in. I feel the steel Marbles sight blank "looks better" on the Winchester rifles and is normally cheaper then the aluminum blanks. Sight blanks can be bought from MidwayUSA and Brownells, and I am sure other places.

Does anyone know the correct front sight height to use with the Buffalo Arms rear ladder sight? I am looking at item SB6N.
My rifle is a run of the mill Wally World 30-30 from around 98. It had the gold dot style and was not hooded.

I recently put on a Williams peep sight on my "94" 44 mag. I tried to remove the buckhorn but it wouldn't budge, on there since 1969. I took it to my local gunshop and he removed the buckhorn and installed a blank for 15.00. Thats a fair price and I didn't mar the "94", I guess what I'm saying if you have any doubt about it, let the professionals do the job.

I couldn't agree more. But that is the problem. When the sight broke, (front sight broke off rear sight bent over to the left. Thanks roomie...) I took it to a gunsmith. He installed a new front sight (wrong height) and tried to bend the rear sight back into place. I sent it back to him because it shot substantially higher than my point of aim and to the left. He replaced the front sight but left it left of center to compensate. It looks ugly and he put a fat blade sight rather than the gold bead that I wanted. $120 later I decided to do it myself and install what I wanted.
I might just try again. I am p/o'ed about the whole thing which is why I put it up some years ago and haven't messed with it.
Now, I'm going to have to try again.
Anyone know a good, reasonably priced, gunsmith in/near Tulsa, OK?
When this is done, I will have spent the value of the gun trying to get new sights for it.
But, something about my 30-30 makes it worth it I suppose.

Anyone tried the "One ragged hole" rear sights? Anyone have a picture of them?

I've got one on my revolver. It works good for that but IMHO the apperature is too big for a rifle. Check out the Skinner sites. There is a link to it in my last post.:)

I didn't figure your mama named you "Woodwright".
I used to live about 6 miles south of North Post, right velow the bench the highway was on. I never truly understood the phrase "gun nut" until I lived there. I moved there a year or two after the unpleasantness with the governmet that got all the attention up there.
I thought it was pretty cool to be able to got to Canada for groceries. at the time, American dollars were worth a tooney, more or less, so it really paid to go up there.
