I had very limited time available to hunt deer this year but managed a few hours in the brush. Early junior/senior doe season found me on stand and at 7:30 AM I killed one with my 336 CB in 38-55. I used a 250 gr. cast bullet and was surprised that the deer went right down and barely struggled across the trail before dying. A quick, clean kill and with open sights too.
When the regular season opened I missed the first day, my wife having hospital appointments that morning. The second day I hunted a 4 acre patch of cover which belongs to a friend. Very early I spotted a deer bedded in some goldenrod. We stared at each other for probably 15 minutes and when I had the opportunity I slowly raised my rifle, aimed and fired. This deer just rolled over and was dead. My watch said 7:10 AM. Killed it with my new-to-me Marlin 35SS LTD and used the Remington 200 gr. core lock bullet over a charge of 3031. Turns out that this deer was wounded, probably the day before, so it was very satisfying to have ended its suffering.
Didn't get out again until a few days ago when I spent an afternoon with my son, trying to find a deer for him.
So that's my season. Two quick deer and back home after a few hours. Someone must have been watching out for me because I usually have to put in much more time before I have any success.
