As the ported version of the 1895 Guide Gun is no longer available off the shelf, do y'all know any really good smiths, that do porting for the gun? Someone in the Pacific Northwest or West would be my preference.
Does Marlin perform this service for it's customers who want to pay extra to ship it to them and have them do it?
Is porting as loud as a muzzle brake? I realize it is essentially the same concept, but was just wondering if there was any general difference?
Thanks,

I suggest you read up on the ported guns. Marlin quit making them for a very good reason.

Well said Grizz!
On the .307 Winchester thread I posted some DB readings I took while shooting the .308 Marlin Express and the .444 Marlin Timber Rifle. He Timber rifle ran in the high 90’s with one shot at 106 DB. That is pretty loud by any standard.
I am looking at a pretty busy work week but when I get a moment I’ll load up a few warm .45-70 loads and run them through my ported Guide gun and post the readings on this thread. The Timber Rifle and the ported Marlin Guide Gun are loud enough that none of my family will hunt with me while I am using them and I do not hunt these rifles without ear protection.

I'd suggest Magna-port's four port system for your Marlin. It works very well, but the guys above are right, you need good ear protection with a ported gun. I've had several done by Magna-port and the recoil reduction works great, but ear plugs are a must and plugs and muffs are even better.
Most of the guys I know that hunt with ported guns spend the money on the electronic ear plugs that allow you to hear normally, but cut off the sounds that will hurt your ears.
Here's where you can check pricing.

My .45-70 1895G is ported I have never had any of my friends complain when shooting with me or any one ever say anything to me that was sitting next to me at the range. I have never felt it was excessively loud either.
My private shoot bench is covered I never noticed anything blowing back or off the ceiling.
My other hunting rifle is a Ruger M77 RL, 20” barrel in .30-06 and it seams to have more of a muzzle blast than the Marlin.
But have to admit the lever gun is not my main choice and will probably be selling it. Because it sits in the safe not in my hands.
