View Full Version : 8x57 into a 9.3x57, how hard is it ?
What all is involved ? I know a barrel is needed, but thats an obvious. Maybe even the 9.3x62 since I read the Mauser 98 action has a little extra room ? But not sure which case parents that one.

How about having your existing barrel rebored and rechambered? You might be surprised how reasonable that can be. Here's a fella to check.

Tang nothing wrong with the 8mm Mauser, it is a fine cartridge. Being I suspect the .323" dia. bore it falls in well with the .30-06,.338-06. Thinking you have a step barrel until told otherwise a barrel swap and chambering and headspace it accordingly, not much will be needed for 9.3x62. Brass is readily available for both the 8x57 and 9.3x62. Bullet selection is very good. Feed rails should not need to be "tweaked". In the Large Ring 98's mag well dimensions would allow a nice fit for the 9.3x62 round.
There is also Jim Dubell that rebores over in Washington aka Clearwater Reboring. He done an old rifle for me and it is very accurate. At 100yds with 225 NF's in the .338-06 it is printing a good .6" with RL15
I have a 8m milsurp rifle in the rack right now waiting for the holidays to end so I can order a Lothar Walther barrel in 9.3x62. The barrels are finished except for bluing and turning the chamber face and shoulder to fit my/your receiver dimensions.
While I was contemplating what to do with this rifle I contacted Clear Water and Classic Barrel Works for prices on rebores. Both basically said the milsurp barrels are not good bets to rebore due to all kinds of problems associated with manufacturing during war time. Neither would guarantee the work...and both were more expensive than just going with LW.
LW sells barrels for M98 at $219.00 plus shipping in 3 contours and two barrel lengths...23.62" and 25.59", military, sporter and heavy sported contours. They are fully chambered but have about 0.020' +/- a few, longer chamber face to allow for fitting to your action. Simple and easy and the cheapest way to the 9.3 I found and that includes buying a cheaper Midway A&B barrel, renting a reamerfor roughly 50 bucks and doing the complete job myself.
You can also go to larger cals like 375 and 416 using the X62 case with a little extra work on the guide rails. More work and expense and questionable as to whether you get any extra benefit using the bigger bullets but the conversions have been done, dies and reamers are available at a premium price.
The 9.3X62 has been around since 1905 and puts you in the 375-416 Taylor, 375 H&H camp without going to a magunum case. It will do excellent yeoman's work, around the yard so to speak, for 95% of all game animals in the world with just one bullet...286 gr pick-your-brand at 2400 f/s any day of the year.
Happy Holidays

You can also go with the WSM case with a bit of extra work also...but going with either the magnum or WSM case is not the easy way to go.

might want to consider the cost to send the action to PacMet or the like for hardening as well for the higher pressure rounds. Lug Setback.
for a good barrel in the 2 chamberings you mentioned go to this site.

Husqvarna and pre-WWII german gunsmiths built a lot of fine Mausers for this cartridge, the 9.3 mm Mauser. If you look around a while, you'll be able to find a fine Husqvarna 46 or 146. A lot of them are being exported from here, as we have a stupid six long guns limit. I think that there are some importers who sell them on the Net.
Norma in Sweden makes brass, bullets and brass - www.norma.cc (http://www.norma.cc)
It is still a popular cartridge here in Scandinavia for moose, bear and hogs. A least two hunters in my team carry an old Husky 9.3.

Have a manlicher in 9.5x57 which is nothing more than an 8x57 opened up to .375 cal and it's my favorite carbine, also have a 9x56 manlicher which is maybe a little more than a 358 Win. in hitting power. both are great calibers for the Mauser action. olddudeone
