I am a newbie,I do have a Win 94 30-30 and a win 94 trapper 44mag Awsome rifles,I have been considering a 45-70 and would like to get all fedback on the marlin cowboy 1895 good or bad.Recoil does not scare me ,I am not macho just realistic the bigger the cartrigde the bigger the kick,How accurate is this rifle at ranges from 100yds-300yds?(not that I could soot that far ,but I am sure some of you west USA guys can.

Support thr move to the communist republic of san francisco...oh,yea and surrender your e NRA oarms too.

From my expirence the Marlin lever action rifles tend to be somewhat more accurate than the Winchester. I know several 1895 Marlins that will shoot moa with ammo they like.
I doubt many people would choose to mount a scope on the 1895 cowboy, although the rifle would likely shoot really small groups if you did. The main thing to remember is no rifle will shoot better than the guy pulling the trigger.
The 45/70 is a whole nother ballgame compared to the calibers you already have, but the recoil is adjustable. If you shoot regular factory ammo like the 300 gr hp bullets most makers offer the recoil will not be bad at all, but get some of the heavy stuff from Garret or Buffalo Bore and you will think that rifle is mad at you.

My friend has a Marlin 1895 cowboy and I have a Winchester 1886 Ltd Ed takedown. The Miroku (Winny) is a nicer gun for sure, but the Marlin comes in a very close second and is only a little more than half the price.

Accuracy is roughly equal and recoil not very bad as both rifles are pretty good-sized guns.

If I didn't have the 1886 Takedown, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up an 1895CB. So I say get one and you'll be pleased with it.

I have one of these fine rifles but would like to put some old time looking sights on it that will carry out a long way. Any suggestions? I know at least some out there will have tried this and I have had a devil of a time trying to find the right size and type of front sight that will do the job for up to 100 yards (for example, a folding ladder type sight) and not shoot low all the time when the ladder sight is collapsed.

Are there any other sight combinations that would retain the open sight old time look and give decent results at out to say 400 yds for game size silhouettes? Does anyone offer a tap in and install combo for the 1895 CB? I'd sure like to save some ammo if someone has already done this..

A guy by the name of Tim makes these ladder sights, may be just what you are looking for. When the sight is folded down, you use the rear sight already on the rifle.

I just got my NEW Marlin 45/70 CowBoy today (a early Christmas present). I spent the day shooting it.

So~~~we were shooting a Taylor Sharps~~a new (1986)model Winchester 1886 and my 1895 Marlin Cow Boy.

First of all the big difference is weight. The Marlin seemed a good bit lighter than either of the other two. Much easier to hold up and on target.

I shot all three rifles---with the exact same loads at 200 yards. I shot them all from a bench rest first. The Marlin was much more accurate than the Sharps , even with the sharps having a set trigger.

The marlin shot about a 1 1/2" group and the Winchester shot about a 3 1/2 " group. The winchester is just HEAVY !

So bottom line is that for the price and accuracy the Marlin won. I could have bought the Winchester (used)for $1350, the Sharps (used)for $850 or the Marlin (new) for $560.

I really like the rifle~~~I am glad I bought it~~~also price was not the factor for me.

Last~~the only things I did not like about the Marlin~~~first of all I would have liked a crecent butstock on it. I am going to try to replace it. Second~~~the rear sights seemed a little "flimsy". I would have liked something more?????stronger. To bad marlin does not offer these options.

You should look at www.buffaloarms.com. They are all about the old timey stuff, and I remember seeing a cool flipup rear ladder sight

M6scout, you should go ahead and get that Cowboy rifle. If you like those Winchesters you have, you will love this Marlin. I bought one when they first came out, and don't use the others now. It is a pure pleasure to shoot, and deadly accurate.

The day I got it, I went to my uncles place, to visit, and he wanted to shoot it. He short the first round at a pile of cow manure 250 yards away. He held high, as he expected it to shoot like a 30-30. He shot over the pile by several inches. The second shot he held dead on and splattered it everywhere. I then took my shot with the same results. They wonderful well made guns.

Like mentioned above if only they would put a cresent butt plate, and the flip up sights on them, what a rifle.

I also have the 1894 Cowboy II in 44 mag, and the 336 CB in 38-55, all of them shoot very well. Been looking for a CB in 30-30, but haven't found one yet.

Good luck with your new rifle.

the marlin cowboy 45-70 is a real shooter in the right hands. love mine, wish they would make one in 444 marlin. do not think that anyone would be disapointed if they got one unless there was something wrong with it.

i ordered a replacement stock for my 1895 cb from precision gunstocks about 2 months ago. just completed the project, took it to the range this past friday, you'll notice a bit more pain on your shoulder with the cresent steel buttplate even with milder loads. i do love the look though, it's a more earlier traditional look and very pretty to look at. i'll let you know how the recoil feels with 55 grains of h-4895 behind the remington 405 grain bullet next week. ouch. as to the traditional look of the butt stock, I addeda recoil pad to mine, then covered it with by hand sewn leather scraps for material recoil pad cover .. it is rough and obviously hand made and hand sewn .. then I made a sling without any metal or anything out of a heavy leather dog leash...and loops, etc. I doubled the extra length at about the place where it sits on the shoulder and will now cover it for a strap carrying pad, with a bit of wider extra leather.. I liked doing it but it is not a great professional job like some can do.. it looks like some poor cowboy did it himself with rough stitching and heavy components, etc.
I will try t post a pic of any one is interested and promises not to laugh.. I like it though.

Gary I will get that done tomorrow.. short on time today.... I am a little embarrassed cause some folks do such fine professional work.. I did mine sitting down free hand making it up as I went, and figured that the average guy with leather awl by a fire would probably have about the same outcome the first time... he would just not have a limbsaver recoil pad under the leather but ... hey..

I will take some pics again.. I took a couple but were too dark ... there was no talent involved and most folks will scoff but I like it for some reason.. like I said there is no hardware at all just leather.. I could now streamline it and put some chicago screws ... but why...?
hope to hear from you I will surely show it to you... I am kinda embarrassed but since you want to see it and do not do this stuff yet it will make you bolder.. you will say .. I can do BETTER than that crap, and that is not bad.. kinda...
