View Full Version : Attacked by squirrel!
I was out bow hunting, leaning against a very large tree in full camo, motionless, with my bow resting on my boot toe. I saw a squirrel about 15 yards away looking directly at me. I could see the wheels turning inside his little head. He was thinking that I was just part of this tree that needed climbing. I was right. He made a bee line for the tree, and when he got close enough, he leaped as high as he could onto the tree's trunk (me). Since I saw this event unfolding, I was somewhat prepared. When he jumped, I was just startled enough to react by raising my bow. He got hung up between the bow string and the lower limb of the bow. Man, you should have seen him scrambling to get out of there. As far as he knew, he just got attacked by a tree! He finally worked himself free, and scrambled up the side of the tree. When I turned around to look at him , he was behind the tree, hiding from the monster side of the tree. Curiosity, however, got the best of him. He peeked around the side of the tree and looked at me. My imagination must have been running wild because I saw a very confused expression on his face (as if squirrels have facial expressions?). I knew what he was thinking when he decided to climb me, so I surely knew what he was thinking when he looked back at me. He was thinking, "What the Sam Hill kind of tree IS this?"
This rare event absolutely ruined my hunt. I was laughing so hard that every deer in the timber for miles around could surely hear me. I could not stop laughing, so I just gave up and went home with a better story than most of the fish tales I've related in the past.

I have never had a squirrel attack me, but I was sitting in my stand one early morning, and noticed a young gray squirrel climing up and down the same tree several times. After a while, he decided to try to get to a different tree. He ran out a branch and just before the end, he turned around and ran back. I guess he did this about 3 times, and then got the courage to make the leap. Well, to say the least, he should have just went the long way! The poor little squirrel jumped, but didn't have the length he needed to make the other branch. Now imagine this little animal flying through the air and flailing it's little arms back and forth trying to latch onto anything! When he hit the ground, he stopped, and looked around as if to see...did anyone see that?!
I also had a cardinal fly into my chest one evening.

I've seen them miss, as well. It's a pretty funny site to see.

That's funny. Just think what he told his family when he got back home!
The look on that squirrel's face was priceless.

When I read the title to the thread, I was thinking about the Demonic Squirrel story below in the Similar threads. Those fluffy tailed rats can be really fun to watch sometimes, but don't think I would want to get to up close and personal with them!

This story has to be 20 years old.I was sitting at the base of a large evergreen, probably hemlock tree.I was ther for quite a while, and started to doze off.I was aroused by a commotion above my head, and a rain of debris on my head.
Down came a red squirrel,at full throttle, onto my head and down my arm and leg.
He never stopped,he just kept on going.

I was attacked by a mouse once. I was disking in early spring, and I guess I must have cut up this deer mouses home. He was a rather attractive little mouse, with a raccoon type cocoa colored mask, I got off the tractor to clean the mud off the disks, and this mouse started jumping at me, jumping waist high yet, and snarling. I didn't know a little mouse could jump more than three feet in the air.

Archery season for elk out here in Wyoming. I was sitting in a hillside blind that had a lot of sage around it so the front of the blind was made from sage. I was looking across the ravine and saw a hawk coming in close to the ground. Before I knew it he had crossed the ravine and was about ten feet away with his talons exposed and wings flared for a landing....a landing on my head. I threw my left arm across my face and he hit it. There was a cloud of feathers...the hawk circled back around and landed on a big sage about 20 yards away and just stared at me, the moving pile of sagebrush that deflected his landing

That likely was one of the Zapus Jumping Mice. They're pretty rare around here, but they sure can jump.

Danged crazy tree rats. It has always been a love hate relationship for me with them. I love to get well inside their comfort zone and see if I can give them a fright. They desearve all we can giv'em.

Once took my wife to- be to the deer camp(thought I would show her how tough we hunters are). We had an old army jeep at camp, and she was sitting in it as I closed up the cabin. As I walked toward it, a rat came boiling out from underneath and headed for my pants leg. As soon as I raised that one, he would try for the other leg. I just could not figure out how to keep both legs off the ground.
This went on for 5-6 seconds. Finally he got tired and scooted off for the barn. My wife was in tears laughing(OK, so it was only a field mouse).

Last November I was set up over looking the north end of a picked corn field. My back was against a tree, my hip settled into leaves and the sun still feeling good as the afternoon chill started creeping in. Over head there were two squirrels and one of them kept dropping twigs and branches close to where i was. Guess since I didn't move he figured it was time for a closer investigation. He finally got within about a foot of my leg before I moved my foot. The look of suprise on his face was funny. He scrambled up the tree and scolded me until I moved out.
