Here in North Eastern Montana they had a Game Damage hunt for Whitetail does. A person could buy 5 doe tags over the counter. I took my 7 year old son along and we had a blast. The picture isnt very pretty but we were just trying to fill the freezer. I shot 3 does that day, it was a good lesson for my son. He learned that day that we need to manage our deer herds or they will get over populated. The 2 things with overpopulation that he learned were that there will not be enough food for all of the deer to live well, and secondly that they are harmful to the farmers and ranchers that are trying to make a living as well. That many deer can reek havoc on grain, alfalfa and barley fields. So all in all it was a very successful day I think.

Almost a truckload Bigsky! I wish I had some of that venison in the freezer. What rifle & loads were you using? And, did you plug all 3 in the same spot, or different spots? Congrats. Hope you have a up-and-coming hunting buddy in the youngster.

Too bad I missed out on that... would have been nice to add a couple more does to the freezer. You are right about valuable lessons being taught to a younger generation.

Hunter safety classes are coming up pretty soon and I'll be using the game damage hunts as examples.

I'm keeping the smoker happy now with some walleye, I'll give it about 8 hours in there, should be pretty tasty.

MikeG graciously gave me some of his dried deer/wild hog sausage to bring home. Sorta tastes like the old fashioned pepperoni. Wife (who usually frowns at wild game) thinks it tastes great!

Shawn,
I was able to put all 3 does down at the same. Not that I am master marksman or anything. I shot one doe and then anther doe ran and paused on a fence line. I started to walk down to where the does were laying and then one of their fawns came back to see what was going on and she got it too.
I had the good ol .30-06, with 150 grain balistic tips. A bit of overkill for whitetails, but the rifle is on and is my go to rifle for any big game.
