I am looking into getting a recoil pad installed on my 1895 45/70. I would love to hear what you guys using, the pros and cons. I was looking at the Limbsaver....what do you guys think?
Thanks

I have the limbsaver on three of my rifles and have shot two others with them. I'm sold on them. It tool my 350 from brutal to not so bad and my 06 to real pleasant. I have one on my 7x57 but have not shot it since the installation. My mom has one on her 357 Roberts, it is quite bouncy. I think that he more recoil the rifle has the better they work, it really make the recoil "sharp and quick" long with taking out the sting. They really work.

thanks for the info...that is what I have heard as well. But a few people around here also talk about the Pachymer.

Add another vote to the LimbSaver pads. I've put them on all my rifles.

I put a Pachmayer "De-celerator" on my .458 Win mag and found it helped a lot compared to the factory pad. The limbsaver seems to have a good reputation also...never tried one.

I don't like to change anything (that can't be reversed) on any of my guns due to maintaining the original value. My 1886 has the metal crescent butt-pad, so I wear one of the pads that straps onto my shoulder for shooting sessions.
This keeps the gun in its original condition and still permit me (if I go hunting) to fire a shot or two -as just a couple shots aren't that punishing.

Don't discount the Pachmayr Decelerator pads. I've used them for years and have never been let down.

Added a Limbsaver to my 444 and a smile to my shoulder.

I have about equel numbers of Pachmayr & Limbsaver pads on my rifles. I have used both pads on my heaviest felt recoil gun; a BLR in .358Win. The rifle is light, short, & has a small butt plate area. Because it is peep sight equipped, I cannot apply top pressure over the front rest when at the bench. Also, I'm usually firing 250 grain handloads pushed by a compressed powder load. The Limbsaver is the best at lowering felt recoil, no contest. It does, however, have it's drawbacks. It;s only available in one thickness, & does not finish up as well after sanding, etc. Also, it is just plain butt ugly on the gun.The Pachmayr looks like it belongs on the rifle after installation. It moderates recoil quite well. Because of thickness choices, you may not have to cut the stock. It seems less likely to hang up on heavy clothing, at least for me. Inthe end, I went with the Pachmayr, because it is better suited to my particular needs on this particular rifle.

I had a pound of lead put in the stock of my Marlin guides 45_70 when switching out the Marlin pad for a Limbsaver. The combination has made the gun considerably more pleasant to shoot when using "Garret" type +P loads. I also shoot a 1886 which is significantly heavier than the Guides, loads that were "reasonable" in the '86 were right nasty in the light Guides. So it is heavier, but still light enough to carry up hill at 9500 feet and shoot hot and heavy loads that are very respectable without much trauma (to the shooter). 47gr3131, or 42gr of 4198 and 420 gr cast bullet. I have loaded and shot hotter stuff but they are not fun and make me begin to flinch.

Big Bore Canada, I too do not want to change the looks of the stock on any of my lever guns but I get by using a PAST RECOIL PAD sewed into my hunting vest. It cuts down around 50% of the recoil to the shoulder. I will also add that it is much cheaper than having a pad installed on your rifle or shotgun. The cost for the magnum pad is around $40 US dollars. They are made in Columbia, Missouri, home of the TIGERS.:)

One thing to keep in mind is that it will hurt the value of your rifle. If you don't think you'll ever sell the gun it's not really an issue. I don't really notice recoil myself.
