just worked up a new load that worked great in my 1895 cowboy. 255 gr lead hardcast used for 45 colt. paper patched with teflon tape to .458.5 used 54..3 grains of imr4198 OAL 2.57 inches wlr primers.only loaded ten cartrages, but it looks to be a winner 5 inch groups of hand at 50 yards with 30 mile hour winds.recoil is stiff but not bad. crono 2 loads 2483 fps,2496 fps. only problem i had was 3 ftf,s, but i lightend the hammer spring and this was the first firing so probly lightend a little to mutch.

I can tell you from shooting BPCR that teflon tape is a bad deal and will leave stuff on the bore rifling. Its up to you but if you really want a 255-gr bullet, just go the extra mile and have a mold created for it. Personally without published data for that load I would never use it myself, as your creating pressure not tested by proffessionals.
Just my .02 Cents on the matter.

Yeah, I was looking for a 250gr load for 45-70 for reduced recoil and flatter trajectory. I'm sure it would be a **** of a deer/pig/bear cartridge. But unfortunately, nobody has ever developed a professional load for it. 444 Marlin is the closest thing you'll get to that load.
The lowest recoil load information with powder that is not position sensative is from Accurate Arms useing AA 5744 http://www.accuratepowder.com/data/PerCaliber2Guide/Rifle/ObsoleteCartridges/45%2070%20Gov%2018000psi%20Trapdoor.pdf
300 (L)
5744 27.9 gr 1405 fps 5744 31.0 gr 1597 fps 18500 2.550"
PB
The recoil is actually very mild.
But I have yet to find load data for anything less in a bullet grain weight. The problem will be feeding the cartridge in a lever gun, in a single action like the H&R - New England rifles and other single shot rifles would be no problem using a colar button type of bullet for what is called gallery loads that are easily developed using BP or sub BP powders.
Load safe and only use data that is publishied data, not something someone else has worked up.

Try paper patching it . Do not be afraid to go to .460 " .

slosuki1, keep us updated on your development of this "screamer," I may be interested in experimenting with it for my GG. If low recoil is all that you're wanting, then try 10gr of Unique under any bullet for a light plinker, or a modest charge of 2400 for a "tweener" load. I am looking for a light, fast load myself, but I am worried that anything too light and fast won't stabilize that far out, not to mention PP seems like a lot of work for someone with very little time on their hands.

i rolled 25 bullets in an hour, and i am new to this. the main reasons i wanted to use the tape, is you can find it at alot of places, and it is water resistent, witch is always a plus for hunting.forgot to mention i also crimped with lee crimp . used 7 inches of tape witch gave a diamitor of .475 then put bullet between to wood blocks and rolled with a moderate amout of pressure. and got the .458.5.

I know that I wouldn't use teflon tape for this application, but that's just me !
I think I found your answer to your load and a place to obtain 250-gr bullets for the 45-70. Talk about a flat shooting 250-gr bullet load.
