Let see and hear about you big bore rig, what have you done to it, or is it stock? Let see some pics

Here is mine a brand new Marlin 1895, 22 inch barrel, 45/70, all stock for now. Want to have the action polished and the trigger lightened, oh and can't forget about the Williams rear peep and firesight front. I love the last pic. I got the gun home and could not believe the size of the bore. I took one of my old .270 win rounds and it fit in the bore of the 45/70...lol.

This is my 1972 mfg. .444S and the "trophy meat" bull I shot last October. The Marlin is mostly stock with the exception of a WWG Happy Trigger. The scope is an old "El Paso" Weaver K3 with post and crosshair reticle. The sling is a Marlin brand that I bought from a pawn shop for $7.

I have hunted with this gun for two years taking a nice mule deer buck, a cow elk, and the raghorn pictured here. In each case the one shot kill was made using the 265 gr. Hornady FN bullet in Hornady Light Magnum factory ammo or handloads that closely match the factory ballistics. The three animals were taken at 75 yards, 35 yds. and 50 yards, respectively.

These are my 45/70's, left to right: Browning 1886 (chopped by previous owner), Marlin 1895 LTD III, 1975 vintage Marlin 1895.

The 2 on the left have yet to draw blood. But the 1895 has taken plenty of game. Including this Kansas whitetail.

And this Texas bobcat (At 135 yards)

No pics of any of the other deer it's killed. It's got an old steel Weaver K2.5 scope and a recoil pad, otherwise it's as it left Marlin.

You just gotta love the old, steel (El Paso) K2.5s on leverguns. AND the old K3s, too.

My Guide Gun is nothing special to look at but it sure shoots well. It sports a Burris Full Field II 2-7X33 scope and I also outfitted it with Firesights. I'll test the loads again in the spring and pull the scope off. I was thinking of getting new scope mounts that also allow use of the sights. The sling is a Marlin sling. They don't show up in the picture but there are quite a few nicks and dings on the stock. It's starting to get some character.

100 yards with my hand loads. It's done better than this but this is the only target pic I have.

All-Thanks for posting pics. These rifles look great. I have a 444 Marlin with a 1x4 Leupold on it and it has been great. I recently put the xs rail and ghost ring sight combo on it so that I can do the scout rifle scope thing or use a traditional scope mount system. Or...use the ghost rings sights by themselves. I only shoot beartooth bullets through it and it does great. Good luck to all and keep safe!

I have a couple of Marlin .45-70s too. The first, my GS has been slightly modified. WWG trigger and ejector, XS sights, I had a longer magazine tube made, the factory rear sight and he original magazine dovetails have been filled, the stock has been refinished with Watco Danish oil, I made a plug to replace the cross bolt safety, I have a mercury tube in the stock and a Limb Saver recoil pad. I love this little bugger.

Here is a shot of the plug for the crossbolt safety.

Here is a close up of the longer magazine tube. It is hard to see the original dove tail isn't it?

This is a picture of my LTD-V.

http://usera.imagecave.com/JCW/100_1268-copy.jpg

It has been altered too. The stock and forend blank came from Treebone Carving. I altered the original lever to make it look like an older one.

http://usera.imagecave.com/JCW/100_0494-copy-copy-copy.jpg

Some of the parts have been color case hardened by Doug Turnbull.

Hey deputy 450,
How many rounds does your magazine hold now?
Does the mercury tube help reduce recoil or is it for balance?

Deputy450

I can get six in the tube now. The mercury tube makes a big difference in recoil. They are well worth the investment if you like to shoot the hotter loads.

I sure wish Marlin would have made the Guide Guns just like yours (and maybe a laminated stock on the GSes.)

Curbs recoil eh? Can i ask how much it set ya back? Can a gunsmith do it pretty easily?

The guys who shoot a lot of trap and skeet use them in their shotguns all the time.

Brownells have them. Here is a link-

http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/productdetail.aspx?p=6728&st=352-205-000&s=16393

I use the rifle version. I also shoot CAS and have the shotgun version in my Stoeger SxS. They help out alot. Expecially when you are shooting a rifle or shotgun that is real light to begin with.

If you have a Gander Mountain store in your area you could go there for the installation. They do it alot for customers as I understand.

Hello all, I'm new to the forum. I stumbled here while searching for info concerning my new(to me) Marlin 1895GS. I was wondering where you (Deputy 450) had the work done on your 1895? I very much like the idea of the extended magazine tube. :D I also wanted to know what you think of the peep sight setup. I hear from most that they are well liked but that they do not offer good accuracy much past 100 yards......I'm pretty well used to peep sights as I have been shotting AR's for a while now and I think that the peep would be just fine past 100 yards. Any comments? I'd appreciate any and all info. Have a nice evening.

Most of the work done on my gun took place in my basement. It isn't to hard to do that on your own if you have mechanical skills and experience.

I like my peep sight but if I were shooting for distance I would go with a scout scope. I can keep my pet load in a base ball size group at 100 yards off the bench and if I were hunting area were a shoot could be longer than a hundred yards then the GS would be home in the safe.

Deputy450,

How did you fill in that old dovetail ... just a very carefully fitted blank and buff it? Nicely done however you did it.

Stainless Guidegun with Ashley XS ghost ring and scout base. Quick release leupold rings with a Burris extended eye relief 2 power scope. The front sight is a Williams fiber optic firesite.

I had a friend that is a gunsmith do that for me. He starts with a piece of stainless that is oversized (width wise) and he kind of smashes it and it fills the gap some how. Once he is done with that he files and polishes it to blend it in.

I have shown that barrel with the two dove tails filled and ask guys who know guns if they can find them. The find the one where the rear sight was but they never find the one where the old barrel hanger was.

Dont know if this worked right I am still learning how to use photobucket. but this is mine. all it has is a Sling and a bushnell 1.5-4.5 power scope. I have though about setting it up with a scout scope but I dont want to fork out the extra chas right now.

Zapzoo don't waste the money on a Scout Scope. You already have the best setup available. Where are you at in FL?

Pretty much a stock LTDIII that I switched to a PG style stock and added a rear aperture sight/fiber optic front sight, Limbsaver pad and a David Clay Stainless follower. I prefer pistol grip stocks on lever guns that have substantial recoil. My first Marlin was a 93 30-30 w/a 28" octagon barrel. I've liked octagons on lever guns ever since.

WOW !!

Thanks guys for all the posts, there sure are alot of beautiful 45-70 rifles.

I just put a Bushnell Elite 3200 2x7-32 with Weaver steel grand slam base and rings. was going to go with a williams rear sight and a fire sight front but I don't want to miss out on the first 10 to 15 mins of hunting in the morning and evening. Here in eastern Canada the woods are think and dark, the scope will be a blessing.

Got no way to post pictures. But I have a box stock Cowboy rifle and a Guide gun that I added a large loop lever from Wild West Guns and a set of Uncle Mike's swivels. Both .45-70.

Stopped in the gun store yesterday and saw a 444 Marlin with a 24" barrel for $450. Really would like to have the money to go back after it!
