I Have to drive about 1.5 hours away to get to a spot a can use the crono. So I have been doing the guessing game. How much do you guess. First let me state I realize that different bullets and bullet sizes all contribute, as do primers and cases and of course, if the data is taken from real guns or pressure barrels, and of course the length of said barrel.

Here was my latest "guess" I was trying to work up a load getting 1000 fps with 300 grain cast performance hard casts measuring .430 (still waiting on my BTB orders). Using 2400.

And yes, I know most manufactures used jacketed bullets, and also know hardcasts TYPICALLY will deliver more FPS than a jacketed bullet with the same charge weight.

All bullets from al manufacturers were 300 grain

Hornady 2400, 14.8 gr 1000 fps
Hosler 2400 starting load 16 gr 1217
Sierra 2400 18.3 gr 1000
Speer 2400 17.1 1003, THIS IS WHAT I BASED MY LOAD OFF AND CUT IT 1 GRAIN FOR A SUPPOSED 1000 FPS
Alliant 15.9 1190 MAX LOAD

What did I get? Well I suspect well over 1000 fps. Recoil was pretty harsh. But......loads shot into 2.5 inches for 6 shots at 25 yars which is amazing for me under indoor lighting which blurs my sights.

I also did 11 grains of HS-6, recoil was a lot lighter and groups were great.
I also tried 8 grains unique and recoil was fairly mild and groups were also very good, about 3 inches for 6 shots with on flyer usually wraking a better group.

All these were out of my 4 inch 629 with .429 cylinder throats. My 4 inch ruger with loose .430+ (430 bullets will drop right through them even though the mic says a .4301. None of the above loads shot worth a **** in the ruger and groups were 4 inches with all loads.

Goal is 1000fps with a 300 grain Beartooth bullet(that you don't have)?
All that you can do is guess at this point. You need the real deal for this one. I would "guess" that you will get near 1000fps. with 2400 somewhere between 14.5-15.5 grains from a 4" barrel.

I suggest you load 5 rounds each at 14.5, 14.8,15.1,15.4 with the lead bullets that you have and drive to the range that you are able to clock your loads. If any of the above exeeds the published load data you have, DON'T GO THERE. Would be better if you have the tools to load at the range. You could "sneek up" on 1000fps. better that way.

May see a difference when the Beartooths arrive? Should get you in the ballpark though.

I gotta ask. Why the goal of 1000fps. with a 300 grain Beartooth 0.430" ?
What are you gonna do if it don't shoot well at that speed?

Keep trying:D

I have a lot of hearing loss, and I am tired of shooting big bullets at 1200-1300 fps from both a muzzle blast and recoil standpoint. Past experience shows SOMETHING will work. It's just a matter of what, and I will keep loading until I reach my goal.
