This winter I have been hunting coyotes. I have not been shooting coyotes so I thought, maybe I should do something to attract the pray to me. I cut down 4 ceaders/pile to make brush piles. To each brush pile I added 5-6 handfuls of corn chops, to attract rodents to the pile. I am now the owner of 5 brush piles, and still no coyotes in daylight hours. I hear them almost every night, Is there something more I can do? Q

I tried planting young chickens and mice, not a one came up. All kidding aside they probably are hunting at night. Are there tracks around you piles? Tracks and coyote scat are a sign that their feeding there.

I've never tried what your talking about or baiting either which is about the same thing, just calling and shooting coyotes I see hunting the fields. Best I could say is try some calling near your brush plots and see if you can bring any out. Calling is probably the most used and most successful method of coyote hunting used in this country.

Here's a forum pretty much dedicated to varmint and predator hunting, you might try your question over there. Lots of coyote folks on that forum.

Thank you Bob for your reply. I have planted stuff for deer and stuff for quail. This just seemed like the next step. I have been calling coyotes this winter on other folks land. I am hoping for a kill on my own place. usually if there is something to eat there is something there to eat it.Q

Your coyotes might have a food source that's too good to leave. A neighbour could hear coyotes almost every night, but never even saw a track. Eventually he was deer hunting in a coulee and flushed a bunch. There were chicken feathers all around. A big broiler operation was dumping their dead birds there and it was a coyote self-feeder. :D

I know for a fact that you can attract coyotes and foxes with dog food and bacon grease!!! This works trust me. I am a trapper and there are many pens here that keep coyotes and foxes for hunting with dogs. Many trappers here attract them with such food to catch them live and sell them to the pens. This is also what they thrive on until they get hunted. You will attract a lot of other things with the dog food too. Coyotes would rather not be crowded so place bait in an area with sparce cover. Check out some of the forums for predator calling for advise there. www.trapperpredatorcaller.com (http://www.trapperpredatorcaller.com) is fair.

Is it legal for you to shoot them at night with a light? You would stand a better chance I am sure.

That is something I will have to look into. I have used a spot light at night to see deer feeding on my food plots but, no shooting was done. If it is ok I would enjoy a few nights out to shoot coyotes. Q
