View Full Version : 38 Special for my Better Half
My wonderful wife has decided she wants a smaller gun than her 1917 S&W, and one she can shoot all she wants. I am thinking a S&W Model 15 would be perfect. High quality finish, wonderful trigger, good accuracy and pretty light, with little recoil, and should last forever shooting 38spls. I kinda am leaning away from a .357, I don't see her ever shooting more than 38s in it anyway and why spend more money. Any thoughts?

My significant other carries a S&W Model 36 2-inch .38 Special and shoots it well. The S&W Model 15 is a great gun, but was a bit too large for my girlfiend to handle comfortably. All the best...

Andy,
I've always been of the mind that you find a gun to fit your hand, skill level, sense of esthetics and your pocketbook. What will she use it for? Carrying concealed? Just defense purposes at home? Plinking? Have you guys considered a small semi-auto? She should definitely be part of the buying process and feel many different guns and even rent a few to shoot at the range if possible. the model 15 is a fine handgun though...to be sure...just wondering if she would prefer this model after handling it.
Good luck!

When my wife was looking for a snubby, we ended up with a Taurus 605. It is chambered for .357, but sees more .38 sp. She carried it for about 6 months, then I picked up a Taurus pt-111 at the pawn shop for myself. She saw it, and I'm now the proud owner of a .357 snubby. LOL....

Pretty much had the same results...bottom line, let HER pick the gun she carries. Might surprise you.
My wife never did take to revolvers...still can't shoot them well. Know that's the common wisdom for new shooters, but in her case it never worked out. Did turn out she doesn't have a recoil issue, so the first gun she picked out was a Colt GM 45...and her concelaed carry gun was a Star PD (also .45acp) for a lot of years. Currently, she like here little baby-Glock (another one I'd not have choosen).
LEt her pick...that's the only way she'll be sure to carry it.

I have carried my Smith Model 36 38sp for 35yrs, and love it.
The other day I picked up my second carry gun, the Kel Tec PF 9, 9mm semi-auto.
I shot about fifty rounds of 124gr reloads at the range with it, and the pistol was very accurate at 20yds.
I'm used to shooting large calibre guns, but the recoil seemed negligible to me.
You might want to give it a look. The price is right at only $269.00.

Good idea letting the wife decide. You'd be surprised what they like. Here's what I'm shooting. It's made by Taurus and is both light and accurate and has a great trigger for a coil spring gun.
The front one is mine and the rear semi is my old shooting partner's Taurus Millinium in 40 S&W. Notice how many more buttons and stuff it's got then mine. Something to be said for simplicity.

My signifigant other used to shoot my S&W model 15, that is until I surprised her with a SIG P228 one Valentine's Day. Now she prefers the SIG which came as a surprise inasmuch as I thought she would be shooting both guns.
