I need a little help. If I apply for an elk permit w/ pref. point in Wyoming, and am successful in the draw, can I turn down the permit and keep the point? Probably a stupid question, but I'm a good source of them! Thanks

Nope. Once the permit is issued, it's nonrefundable. Call the WY G&F to be sure, though.

Thanks 'dog. I did call Wyo. G&F a few days ago, and got the answer. I thought it might be possible to turn down a permit because here in Maine when they draw permit recipients, they also draw names of 50 or 100 alternates who may get a permit if the any of original permittees cannot or will not accept the permit. There must be some wasted permits in states that don't do this.
Yes - sometimes those hard to get draw tags go to waste.
Had a bad vehicle accident a couple years ago and managed to bust up my knee. Shortly afterwards was notified by the Arizona G&F that I'd been drawn for both deer and elk. Tried numerous times to contact the lady at the department in charge of taking these tags to turn over for youth hunts, but could never get past the message machine and never got my calls returned.
Some kid(s) missed out on a good hunt due to some bureaucrat not doing her job.

In Colorado if you turn in a big game tag before the season opens, you can get back your money or your preference points, but not both. However they will not re-issue the tag to another hunter.

I should clarify the Maine policy: If you are drawn for a moose permit, you don't get the permit right away because Maine doesn't require that you send in the permit fee or buy a Maine Big Game License (res. or non-res) when you enter. After you are drawn you then have 30 days to decide if you want the permit. The untaken permits go to folks at the top of the "alternate list". Furthermore, if you get into a zone that is not of your liking, you can swap permits with someone (residency not a factor) who wants your zone and has the one you want.
