I have a load for the Lazer Cast 350 flat point, which would also work with the Beartooth 350. It consist of a Lee dipper the 1.9cc of Blue Dot, a CCI 200 primer and any brass. No fillers and quiet accurate, about 1350 fps.
Many people have loads for 2400, but I haven't used it in the 45/70 yet. It has a burning rate not far from Blue Dot, but they aren't interchangable.

4198 powder is a favorite of mine for the 45/70 cartridge. The other two are 3031 and Reloader 7.
between 29.5 and 32.0 grains with the 405 grain 457193 lyman bullet gives velocities between 1272 FPS and 1401 FPS,with bullet dia .458
With a Dacron filler the velocity increases to 1453 with 29.5 grains of 4198 powder, with bullet dia of .459

I'd suggest 40 grains of Varget under a 405 grain Remington bullet. Varget is the one rifle powder I'd choose if I could have no other.

Mild? None of your criteria but this is mild. 300gn Rem HP. 33gns of Re7 very accurate in my rifle.

I bought some Rem 405g SPs and some Hornady 350g FP
I am going to load up the 350s per the loads that Hornady gave me which are lighter than the Hogdon data and see what I come up with

ccoker,
Jackfish had some great loads there. But one thing is, what is accurate in one gun may not be as accurate in your gun, you may have to tweak the load some to get the best accuracy in your gun. Good luck and have a blast shooting.

Hi,
I shoot a Marlin 45/70 guide gun with Trail Boss Powder loads.
350g lead cast fp 14.0gn 1145fps
350g lead cast fp 16.3gn 1200fps
I have tried this out in CAS long range at 300 & 400 yards the drop is pretty big but sighted in @ <100yards it should give good results.
I've found it to be a very clean burning powder and it certainly is bulky enough not to need any fillers.

Dave

from Hornady:
the 350FP is tougher (designed for 450), round nose will expand quicker
out of 22: barrel
H4198
min 37.1, max 48.4
41.5: 1600 fps
44.9 1700 fps
loaded some up today and shot em
37g, not so good group
41.5 touching at 50yards
45, same
48.5 same (starting load per Hodgon)
50.5, same
41.5 was a nice easy shooting load, at 100 yards group was an inch max
dead on at 50, 2" low at 100
so, a 75 yard zero should be +1 at 50 and -1 at 100
the hotter loads weren't bad recoil wise just more brisk
will try a few more loads in the low 40s
thanks

I don't know who told you this but I'm not sure it is true. The Hornady .458" 350 grain RN was originally designed for the 458 Win Mag for potential velocities of 2500+ fps and even had the cannelure placed for a 3.2" OAL in that round. Recently they moved the cannelure for lever gun OAL but I don't think they reduced the jacket thickness or changed the core alloy. I would think the RN is tougher than the FN as the FN was designed for use in the 450 Marlin at a velocity of 2100 fps.

the guy at Hornady..
what you say makes sense
I loaded up some of the 405s playing with varying powder charges
28 was pretty good
31 not so good
tried 29 yesterday and three groups all did the same thing, 2 touching at 75 yards and 1 flyer 2" high
weird

Did you try the Varget?

THe LEE 340 grain bullet is the very best plinking bullet there is! I like to use 14 grains of Unique for small game and plinking! For a little bit more oomp, try 35 grains of Reloader 7. For a very manageable all around load; Use 47-51 grains of Reloader 7. For exceptional accuracy; use 30 grains of IMR 3031 and 8-10 grains of cream of wheat!

Tried a middle trapdoor load today using 45.5g of Varget (40-50 listed on hodgon's site)
should run about 1500fps or so
pretty mild recoil
Varget lists lower pressure for similiar FPS than H4198
I use Varget in my 308 and 45.5g, the powder dispenser was set there so I decided to load up a small batch
about an inch or so group at 75 yards, not bad
will experiment a bit more with Varget
a bit flatter trajectory than the 28g 1300fps load of H4198
I would feel comfortable hunting with this load within a hundred yards or so

there are some good loads around for 2400 and 325g to 425g cast bullets. check the alliant site and I bet there's some pressure tested data that's suitable.
