I have a 1885 uberti and everything about it is fine, but the stock is a "orangy redish" color that is unatracrive to say the least. What kind of finish is on the wood ie. epoxy, schallac, varnish? I would like to remove it and staine it a darker walnut color. Can any body suggest to me what I can do?

I have refinished alot of rifle stocks.You can pick up a 1 quart can of Klean Kutter at any home depot,follow directions on back of can. I would place the stock in a aluminum turkey pan and use a 1 1/2 inch paint brush. strips any finish extremly fast and is safe .will not harm wood.You can then stain, and use wipe on poly in clear or gold also at home depot, for a professional job.
