Hello All,
I'm new to this forum, as well as the T/C Encore I just purchased. My first barrel is the 26" heavy barrel in the .223 Rem. I was able to take it out for the first time yesterday. like the contender I owned years ago it shot pretty well, for a first time out. Even with cartridges off the shelf. I will be setting up a reloading bench ASAP! I miss the challenge of working up a good load! Any way..... back to the post!
Who out there has a worked up a good load that they would like to share with Me and the rest of Us Encore shooters?
Any input would be GREAT!
Thanks
Mike

I hope this isn't hijacking this thread, but I too shoot an Encore factory heavy barrel in .223. I am just getting into reloading and a question I have is how do you determine your bullet seating depth so that the ogive of the bullet is .010 off the lands as mentioned in a previous post? Or better yet, where do you start with overall length when reloading in general: Start with the maximum OAL stated by the reloading manual? Just some questions I have in hopes of getting a good .223 load going. Thanks!

I know this was covered back some time ago but I will try to help. There are several gages sold for this purpose, but your really don't need them, IMO. I find my COL of my weapons by using an empty casing, the bullet of choice, calipers, and a sharpie marker.
1. Choose one bullet from box you intend to load and "paint" it with the sharpie (this can also be done with a candle, but I like the sharpie better).
2. Start the bullet into the case mouth just enough to hold it.
3. Gently insert the unloaded cartridge into the receiver like you are preparing to shoot.
4. Close the breach (bolt or other action type) and allow it to push the casing in so that the bullet recedes into the casing.
5. Remove the unloaded cartridge and measure the COL of the cartridge.
Perform this procedure a minimum of 3 times. Average the results. Then subtract 0.030 from your cartridge measurements. This will be your Maximum COL for your firearm. You will also have to take into consideration COL if you use a magazine because this may limit your COL so that it fits in the mag. Many times you could actually load longer than your magazine will allow and you are constrained by that limitation unless you will load one-at-a-time.
It may also help to have a cleaning rod handy in case the bullet actually gets stuck in the barrel during this exercise. Simply push it out and start again, with the bullet a little deeper in the case before starting next time.
As far as load data: I have some .223 data on my website that I use. It is not from an Encore barrel. These loads were established in an H&R .223 Heavy Varmint Barrel and an AR-15.
