Marlin 1895 45-70
300 grain Speer #2482 seated to 2.53" and crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp Die
Winchester brass, 2.1" trim
CCI 200 primer
45 grains H4198
Approximately 1715 fps and under 17,000 CUP in the 1895G
55 grains H4198
Approximately 2130 fps and under 28,000 CUP in the 1895G
Should be a good shooter somewhere from one to the other. I shoot the 55 grain load in my 1977-vintage 1895.

That last load must be a real shoulder thumper. I have some 350 grain Hornady's loaded w/ 50.0 gr IMR 4198 and they are painful to shoot. Were loaded by an old buddy, and every time I shoot one, I'm tempted to pull the bullets and load them up softer.
I've loaded 51.5 grains of Reloader 7 under a 300 gr Partition for 1955 fps in my guide gun. If you drop that Rl 7 charge to the mid 40's you should have a load for a 300 grain jacketed bullet that will be more like the Federal classic ammo. That shoots a bit over 1700 fps in my rifle.
