Does anyone have any loading experience with the Ackley 35-348?

Welcome to the forum Rod Ray. Rules are simple, be nice and join in.

I'm going to move this over to the wildcat section.

348Ai is my experience which ballisticly is identical. Bob Hutton of Guns and Ammo as I recall wildcatted the cartridge you mention. Pretty much duplicates the 35Whelan Improved.

Neat cartridge but I would choose the Whelan for the availability of brass and dies.

Came across an old Hi Wall action with a unfired Douglas snubby barrel chambered for 35-348. I thought it might be good protection for these pesky chipmonks and fun to shoot too. I don't think I would need more that a neck sizer and seating die since it's a ss. I have a 348 so a few cases aren't a problem... I'll make a chamber cast to send to Mr lee and see what they come up with.

I concur with the 35 W. I inherited my Dad's old Enfield. Good shooter, good cartridge.

I certainly appreciate your opinion.

I had Mr. Ackley himself, shop anyway years ago, redo (rebore) a Siam Mauser to .35/.348 Ack Imp for me. I won't go into all the details. Still a work in progress and he has been retired for 30 years anyway. POINT: I have loaded to standard book/reloading manual "starting" loads, many times, for .358 Norma Magnum without serious or interesting pressure signs. "Medium" loads are not over doing either. Case does not have the strength of a .358 Norma, belted magnum head and I would not push it to thos levels. Shortens case life a LOT!. But you can get close which is a bit more than .35 Whelan, I think. You work at your own risk. LUCK.

Thank you kindly for the advise. I 'spec most folks around here do everything at their own risk, but that's always a good reminder.

I appreciate the help and reply.

Go to Z-Hat Custom Gunsmithing sight for 35 Hawk Ballistics
( http://www.z-hat.com/358%20Hawk%20Ballistics.htm ) It is nearly identical to the 35 Welen AI. It will give you an idea what kind of performance you can get.

Good Luck
