I have a new CVA Mag Hunter muzzleloader that I am trying to break down so that I can lube the breech plug and have a few questions.

First, on this type of gun is there some sort of nipple? The book talkes about removing the nipple, but I do not see one. There is a place where the 209 primer seems to go, but it seems to just be a part of the breech plug, is this right?

Secondly, I have taken the gun apart, but cannot seem to budge the breech plug. Should it be this hard or am I doing something wrong? I am sliding the breech plug tool (which acts like a giant screw driver) through the back of the gun, and into the corresponding slot in the breech plug, but cannot get it to budge. I have thought about spraying it down with penetrating oil, then placing it in a vice and then trying to back it out. But I just thought that it should not require that much effort, and was afraid that I was doing something wrong. I also am afraid of damaging the barrel in the vice.

Any input would be appreciated.

Braden, If your gun like like the kodiak then yes - what you are talking about is the breach plug. Have you fired the gun or are you doing the initial cleaning recommended by the manufacturer?

I was doing the initial cleaning, the gun has never been shot. I was having trouble keeping the barrel from turning as I turned the breech plug tool. I went back out into the garage and placed the barrel in a MTM sight and clean, and was able to get the breech plug out. I was surprised of how much force that was required to remove the plug. I will be sure to put some breech plug grease on it before I put it back in.

I took a quick look online. Your model gun is quite bit different than mine. I got nothin, but someone else will have some advice for you. Good luck.

With regard to the effort put into removing parts for initial cleaning- my breach plug required what I thought was some significant effort to remove initially- but then I had already fired t7 through it, which gummed it up a bit.

The tool used to remove the plug is cut just a little odd. It slips just a little in the breech plug and will bind a little. Be sure to keep it strait and centered. the grease will help too.

Need help breaking down CVA muzzleloader

An eight pound hammer should work just fine. Oh, sorry, it's a CVA...you'll only need a two pound hammer. :D :D :D :D

Okay! Sorry! It was just too tempting to pass up! ;)

The breechplug on a new unfired rifle really should not have been that tight. If in the future it gets that sticky you will want to plug off the bottom of the breechplug and pour some black powder solvent down the barrel and let it soak for a couple of hours or better yet overnight and that should break it free. Also, check out some of Randy Wakeman's articles on CVA's on the Chuck Hawks Guns and Shooting website, just google Chuck Hawks and you can find the site. Go to the muzzleloader section and read some of his reviews on CVA products, especially the one about White Labs. tests on the metal strength and quality that CVA uses in their muzzleloaders, it's a real cause for using caution about using heavy loads in a CVA.
