Does anyone know of any problems with the S&W MP pistols? I have shot them and thought they were great. I have been told recently that they are having problems with feeding and reliability after they have a few thousand rounds through them. It sounds like they just wore out.
Thanks,

Some folks are still holding a grudge against S&W over a bad political decision that was made by the company regarding the antigunmaker lawsuits. Management has changed and is now better aligned with 2nd amendment values. Take anything you hear about S&W with this in mind. You may want to check out the American Rifleman article on the M&P pistols.

Thanks Bill, I always keep that in the back of my mind but I know a few guys that shoot IPSC and put many rounds through their pistols. They were so impressed with the MP that they bought them and are now wishing they had not.

They could be right. Isn't IPSU one of those games where the participants not only run a lot of rounds through their guns but they tend to use rather stout loads because of the need to reach a certain energy level. If that's the case it brings to mind the plight of S&W K frame guns. They were wonderful guns in .38 Spec. and were also chambered for .357 Mag. No problems until it became the practice of police departments to require that officers qualify with the same ammunition they carried on duty. Almost overnight, cheep-easy to shoot, 38 Specials for practice and qualification were out.
Then the problems started to surface. The K frame guns were fine for limited use of .357 rounds but would not stand up to a steady diet of .357. I even heard of problems shooting lots of +P 38s but that may have been with alloy K frame guns. The problems were not of catastrophic failures but the accelerated wear caused mechanical malfunctions. This problem may even have helped convince police officers that revolvers were not as reliable as they had thought and added fuel to the change to semi-automatic pistols that occurred.
You would be doing us all a favor by checking into this further. It is common for manufacturers to test new products "to destruction". Find out what results S&W had and any independent tests. Also check out the loads the IPSU shooters are using. My own tendency would be to stay away from ANY of the new plastic frame guns if I was pushing things even a little. They may be plenty safe but pushing them might accelerate wear.

When I see those guys, I will try to determine what loads they were using and the number of loads fired in those pistols.

the M&P line has consistently got rave reviews
I just picked up a really clean full size 40 yesterday for a great price
I haven't shot one yet, but I definitely prefer the feel/ergos better than Glocks (had a bunch of em)
the bore sits lower than a Sig (had a bunch too)
the trigger to me is better than a glock (out of the box)
as for IPSC, most people shoot standard loads, 40 and 45 are very popular
I shoot my 1911 for IPSC

I shot the 9MM and 40 MP and loved them both as did the guys I mentioned earlier that now hate them. I was able to keep all rounds in a 5 inch circle off hand at just over 50 yards with the 9MM. Everyone I know loved them until they started misfiring after a few thousand rounds. One gun shop owned by an IPSC shooter stopped selling them after having to send too many of them back.

hmm
interesting, mine won't be shot that much, it was bought for a PD gun as it was a good deal and I have nothing right now with a tac light rail
I will shoot several hundred rounds of 180g FMJ then several hundred rounds of 180g HST and assuming no issues will call it good to go

Please take my advise. If it starts to give you problems; get rid of it ASAP!!! The problems get worse fast when they start.
