Which is the best way to book a first African hunt for plains game? Last week I spoke to at least a dozen outfitters from Africa at the Denver Sportsman's Exposition (I understand at least 30 were there) who might be very good (although I've not yet called references). I've been on over a dozen outfitted hunts in various states and Canadian provinces (only one of which was through a booking agent), I'm wondering if using a booking agent (such as Cabela's) on an African hunt simplifies the travel, customs, firearms registration, and trophy shipment hassles. Several of the outfitters mentioned using a company to aid the customs and firearms process and another to pack and ship the trophies.
Since several of you apparently make repeated trips to Africa, perhaps some of you can recommend the best approach.

With the state of affairs the way it is on the African continent today, I would only book through a reputable agent that was here in the U.S. (or Canada if you are from Canada). Too many troubles afoot these days to implicitly trust things won't go wrong, or if they do, you will get your money back.
Cabela's is not one that I would trust. They represented Out of Africa Adventures a few years ago when OOAA got busted for hunting illegally in Zim. They've also booked for guides here in AK that have found themselves in trouble.
Having said all of this, I did book my first hunt in Zimbabwe direct, and everything went great. Though I trust the outfit I booked with completely, I would go through a Stateside agent today.
As far as who to book with, figure out what you want out of the experience. If it is to hunt a certain area, for particular animals, particular size, etc..., do your research to find the agent that represents those interests. Check all sources for complaints. Several on-line forums are good for that, as well as "The Hunting Report". Make sure the agent holds your money in the U.S. until time for you to leave to make sure all is in good shape as you depart. They can also help with all matters concerning your hunt. Most have quite a bit of experience in hunting various African countries.

I would stay away from Cabelas too! They will not act on your behalf if things go wrong. They will only point a finger. That said, I would ONLY go if the outfitter had references from at least a few years and a wide geographic area that you could talk to. I got burned by a PH in South Africa as did many other people by the same guy. He has changed the name of his outfit at least twice since then because of bad references.
Good luck,
