View Full Version : Is Alox a hazardous shipping item?

Hi,

I live in Canada, and recently I received a shipment from a US-based firearms supply company. One of the items I ordered was a Lee Lube & Sizer kit, which was supposed to come with a 4oz bottle of Alox. However, the lube was conspicuously missing from the Lee package. I contacted the supply company, and they said that they had to remove the Alox because it was considered a hazardous item for shipping.

Has anyone ever had a similar experience shipping Alox either to Canada or within the US?

I was a bit surprised, but hey, what isn't harmful now-a-days? Besides the inconvenience of now having to find another source of Alox, I was a bit disappointed that the shipper never contacted me regarding the issue; I would have just cancelled the order as the Alox was half the cost of the kit.

Boy what a bummer stickhunter. Have you ask the folks you bought from about that? I sure would have. Most US shippers are pretty good about letting a customer know if an item can't be shipped. I can't believe liquid Alox is a hazardous item either. Are there any places in Canada you can order it from? Geeze I'd be griped too.

More and more stuff gets added to the hazardous list every day. Here's a Canadian supplier. I'd phone in the order and ask what the shipping regs are. 1-800-696-0253

Since the supply company only gave you a partial lub and sizer kit, did they deduct the price of the Alox? I think that would be the only right thing to do. Agree with the others that there isn't any logic in deeming Alox a hazardous item for shipping. If it can be shipped all over the CONUS, why can't it be shipped over the border?

No, they charged me full price for the kit. In their reply to my initial inquiry about why the Alox was removed, they ignored my request to credit the cost of the Alox for a future order. I will press them again as they are a well-known supplier and have a good reputation.

It's a small amount of money, but is more annoying because it's delaying my first attempt at casting; that and the fact that I'll have to pay an additional shipping charge to get the Alox.

Stickhunter: Sorry to hear you got hosed. Go to www.frfrogspad.com/homemade.htm and find a lube recipe to make your own. All kinds of cleaners and lubricants to be made there. I think I got everything in the address that should be there. Good luck.

Yes you can make you own bullet lubes and use what is called a cookie cutter method..Easy to do and easy to use..I have made a nice lube with a 50-50 mix of bees wax and olive oil...You can lesson the olive oil to make a stiffer-harder lube if you wish..I never buy any of the commercials lube any more..

Dude, you got ripped off! Let us know what company you ordered from. I'll email them to let them know I won't order from them anymore and why! Everyone who reads this thread should do the same. If there's no customer service, there should be no customers!

Stickhunter, Lee Liquid Alox is manufactured by Lubrizol. Their name for it is Alox 606-55 and it is a rust proofing compound. Eg for rust proofing car underbodies.

I have never had an issue with Lee Precision in sending me Alox lube you might want to contact them. But as Jack mentioned in his post wholesale sports sells Alox and they shipped it to me with no problems. I have noticed in the last year that it has been getting increasingly more difficult to get certain products from the states. I will call to check before ordering anything from the states. I also ask if they have a distributor in Canada this helps cut down the cost especially at the border. I recently tried to order a J key (screw driver) from Remington and was told that they would not send it to me as I lived in Canada however they did give me a number for a distributor in Canada. I just thought what the f*** its just a screw driver...

Sorry to resurrect this aging post...

For all those in Canada (and perhaps in the US?), I just tried to order a bottle of Lee Liquid Alox from Wholesale Sports in Calgary. To my surprise, I was told that it could not be shipped by Canada Post and had to go by courier because it is a hazardous product!?!?!

I'm going to see if I can find out what gov't regulation states that this is the case, but anyways, that's the latest info I have.

KGS, how long ago did you place your order for Alox with Wholesale?

If it's what I remember, it's liquid becuse it contains petroleum distillates ( paint thinner ). That's flammable, so they may not want it in the mail. Probably could have gone by UPS, though.

My last order to wholesports for Alox was a short 13 months ago. Wow I can't believe how things change so fast. Who makes up these silly rules. I decided to see how well it burned and gmd3006 is right it is very flammable. Never thought it would burn I was surprised at how fast it lit up. Stickhunter I would order it from Wholesale any way but order at least 6 of them as they do last a long time might save you money in the long run.

Stickhunter-If your order did ,in fact, come from a dealer in the USA-as a favor to our forum members-you should let us know the name of the dealer. No point in someone else getting porked. In general, many of the people in civilized countries, are getting more stupid so nothing surprises me any more.

LOL stickhunter, from a fellow Canuck. Want a good lube? Just buy a pack a crayolas. Same stuff only it looks like you are a bit strange. Melt the stuff in a shallow pan, use the previously mentioned cookie cutter method and slip the bullets through the resizer.
