greetings All

I am having a difficult time getting cast bullets for my 45 colt and 45/70. I ordered then and have not got them and that was a month ago.

So anyone have any ideas were to find some at a REASONABLE price and who will ship them on time?

Ronin

Where did you order from?

If you have to have them quick; order from what Midway or Graf's has in stock. Custom bullet casters are not that speedy in my experience.

The excellent Beartooth bullets, whose owner pays for this forum, can take a while to deliver but they are worth the wait for those who plan ahead.

Being a mostly blackpowder cartridge shooter, I get my cast bullets from a guy in Miss., known in the Cowboy Action Shooting circles as Parson Delacroix.

He has the .45s and .45-70s, and some in bullet designs specifically for blackpowder loads. He'll even lube with your choice of SPG or his house lube (cheaper, and works fine for me!).

I just looked up on the last price list I had (Feb 2007), prices may have changed, though, but here's some of what was listed;

.45 Colt 1k, 175 gr at $39, up to 250 gr at $45
.45-70, 500 bullets 385 gr at $65, up to 500 gr at $75

Drop him a line and he'll probably send the newest pricelist back pretty quick.

Not being able to get the bullets I want when I want them. This is primarily why I started casting my own to have better control over my supply.

Marshal Kane, I got to agree with you! That is one reason I cast my own, and the other is, when things were looking bad! Time Period Brady Bill, I had a guy that would cast and lube anything you wanted for $15.00 per 1k., and if you wanted a special bullet, if you would order 5k of them he would buy the mould and sizer.
So back to things looking bad I bought up 20k and put them away. About 6 months ago, I was getting low, so I went to call this guy, he had got a divorce and moved, so i went shopping on the next, HOLLY COW, did I get a shock.
Belle, Sounds like the guy you buy from is fair priced.

Kdub, I don't know when this is going to happen, and there is a lot of factor, one depending on my back, and 2, depending on lead price, I was getting all the lead I wanted for free, untill the price went crazy. I had a tire shop that was giving me all his used lead, I went in there 2 weeks ago, to see how much he had, he told me, that last week a man stopped by and ask if he had any used wheel weights, PAul told him that he had a guy that came by and picked it up once in awhile (me), the man said how much you got right now, Paul said 3- 5 gallon buckets full, the man said I will give you $200.00 for all three. (So now you know the rest of the story)
Back to what I was going to tell you I hope by Mid May, I will have my Master Caster up and running, will be casting 38's,9mm, 40 cal, 44's, 45acp, 45LC.
Give me a shout about that time, I will be lubing with a home brew lube, that can be used smoke or smokeless. I am not going to sell to very many people.
Hope I can help!

That IS sticker shock! The last time I bought WWs from my local tire store I paid $20 for a 5 gallon bucket. From what you're telling me, the price has more than TRIPLED! Maybe the next time I go to the range, I'll dry fire and pretend that I'm really shooting.

People around here go nuts, everyone was saying that lead was going to go to $2.00 a pound!!! Just a bunch of dumbies!!! It's like gas prices! In 1974 I bought a Brand New GTO drove it of the show room for $2395.00.
Last summer car batteries where 25 cents, i think they are now paying $2.00, where are they coming up with this $2.00 a pound at!!

Sorry about ranting off.
I hope you folks have a good day.
And maybe somebody will get to go out and shoot this weekend.
See Ya
Greg

When I hear people complain about the high cost of gas, I tell them the price of gas isn't too high, the value of the dollar is too low. This is reflected in the high price of almost everything. Lead shot is selling here for $25 per bag ($2 per pound). Scrap lead was over a dollar a pound here several weeks ago.

Inflation is the real culpret and is a method whereby the government taxes us without us realizing it. Look at the loss of purchasing power of money in a savings account over time - the thrifty are being cheated out of their savings. If one looks at the value of hard currency, such as gold or silver, relative to the prices of other commodities, there is a good correlation. If we were still on a gold or silver standard, we would not be subject to inflation from the printing of currency. Someone remarked to me a few years ago that in the 1920s an ounce of gold worth $20 would buy a good quality suit - with gold now around $900 an ounce, an ounce of gold will still buy a good suit, in fact almost 2. However since much of the government's debt is owned by other countries such as China, perhaps we need more inflation in order to pay off that debt with cheaper dollars.

Irv you hit the nail on the head.

Well, he hit one nail, kinda.

World demand for metals is what's driving up the cost of our toys. What do you think the 100 thousand tons of lead shielding for Iran's reactors did to the price of lead? Or Pakistan's? Or North Korea's? Or all the lead the Chinese have to add to those toys? (OK, that one is a joke) But China is buying huge amounts of lead, and copper.

Guys - we need to keep in mind that the board host is in the cast bullet business and it's sorta bad taste to undermine him (especially as he freights all the bills for the board costs and provides it to us free) by advertising other commercial casters.

Thanks for everyone's input, but we Moderators have agreed this needs to be closed.

Thanks also for understanding our decision.
