This one has my curiosity stirred up a bit. I used to shoot 3/4 mile matches long ago on a planet far far away ( in my youth ). This one is beginning to see some use and I'd like to know more about it. I'd consider building one just for the sake of doing it but I don't have enough information on it just yet! All I know so far is that the shooters are claiming 6" groups at 1000 yards using 190 HPBT's. That happens to be " MY Bullet" and I'm very intrigued!

I went to Ammoguide and used their ballistic comparison tool to get the following:

Don't know if it answers any questions, but I found it interesting.

The 30/338 is essentially the 308NormaMagnum. Norma's adoption of the round is said to have killed Winchester's plans and led to the shoulder being pushed froward and neck shortened to create the 300WinMag. I'm pretty sure before the WinMag was released the 30/338 did have a start as a target cartridge and is still used. But the only guys I've corresponded with that shoot 1000m benchrest are using 30/284, plus the Australian FLY record I believe is held by a 30x57 of sorts. The long range guys here seem to be happiest with a very slippery 180gr-190gr at just under 3000fps.

Fred Huntington (RCBS) neck down the 338mag case think it was same year as the 338mag came out 1958 which makes it earlier than the 308 Norma Mag and 300mag. Alot figured the 30-338 mag should have been a factory case instead of the 300mag and I think had 338 mag not been wildcated might of been. I've got two 30-338 mags that I used for elk/deer and at one time Rem chambered the 40x in 30-338 mag for match shooting. With the 5r/5c barrels today and 190gr HPBT should get the velocity need for 1000yd. Back in the 60's Browning chambered the 308 Norma Mag and you could get factory brass was pretty popular but when the brass got hard to get it just died out. Well good luck

My J.C.Higgins FN 98 has been rechambered and abit of metal work ie.. bolt face and rail to feed from its original chambering of the .30-06 springfield. I don't shoot that far and probably can't either but it is an accurate shooting sonofagun! I load 240grn. PP Woodleighs at velocities of 2485fps avg and is a remarkable .6" @ 100yds!
Hey! I just had to say something about the .30-338! :)
