I have an Auto Ordnance .30 cal M1 carbine. It has the L shaped flip over sight with two apertures. I test fired the rifleusing a man sized silhouette. Using Remington/UMC 110 grain ball ammo and aiming at the center of the silhouette the rounds impacted head high and to the right of the head of the silhouette. By aiming at the belt buckle area I was able to place the rounds in the chest area of the silhouette. I also tried American Eagle 110 grain ball ammo and the results were a little better, but still high and right.

I've been told that the large aperture was for 150 yards and the smaller one for 300 yards. If the larger aperture is for 150 yards and I'm shooting at a target at 50 yards is this the cause of the rounds impacting high? Are the rounds on the upward part of their arc and would drop in pretty much on target at 150 yards? Am I off base on this? Any opinions as to whether the rifle is just plain shooting high? I can put adjustable rear sights on it if need be. Help would be appreciated. Thank you.

They didn't plan on a windage error (can drift that sight in it's dovetail to correct that), but the elevation is about how they designed that sight...for the reasons you surmised. I've always liked the simple flip "L" and the cleaner line it made for the reciever, so if it bothers you, perhaps look into a taller front sight?

to add to the confusion...if you hang a bayonet on the barrel, it will probably shoot lower (at least that was true when i tried it).
