I recently had a problem with removing and inserting the cylinder base pin of my Beretta Stampede. After looking things over, I determined that the pin had developed a slight bur next to the catch pin groove. I polished off the bur and it works normally again. My question is, shouldn't the base pin be made hard enough for this not to happen? I haven't shot this revolver much more than a couple of hundred times.

Well, you'd THINK a gun with "Beretta" stamped on it would be up to snuff, however, the Stampedes are really made by Uberti (bought up by Beretta). Not to say they are bad, but some of the steel used is a bit softer than, say, a S&W, Colt, or Ruger. I have or have had over the years 8 Uberti firearms, and there was some part(s) in each that seemed to wear faster than normal. Several parts were replaced as necessary, and they apparently were stronger stuff than what came in the guns.
Keep an eye out for excessive wear on your hammer notches, and angles on the trigger/sear/bolt. I've had two bolts (in 2 different guns) break a "leg", one on a brand new gun after 8 rounds.
Also, watch the timing, from the factory the guns are set up to work, but probably could use a little "tweaking" to get really crispy. Mine all benefited from some.
There are aftermarket base pins that you might consider if you are worried about the original one working up a burr again.

Thanks Belle. I'm beginning to think I should've bought a Vaquero.

Old Forester,
In my opion, they are 2 different breads, I don't care what anyone says. When I was Big game Hunting, I owned nothing but Ruger No.1's, best rifle's bulit! When I bought my first Cowboy Gun I bought a Vaquero limited series, then I bought a Hawes, close to a colt. If I could sell my Vaquero 44 and the Hawes 44, I would go buy 2 new Uberti's.This is how I would look at you deal, I would rather have a softer base pin, than a soft cylinder bushing or a softer frame!!! Shot that gun and have fun, then if you want to step up, buy a USFA or a Great WesternII from a very Top Notch Gunsmith in Ca. this is what he his friends to buy.I own 3 Hawes, 4 Uberti's, and 1 Ruger, out of the guns listed, Uberti first, Hawes Second, Ruger last!!
Just my 2 cents!
Greg
