looking to get a tasco 2.5-10 x 42 to put on a .308 and maybe on my .30-06 also. was thinking about getting leupold quick detach mounts and rings for it if i decide i want to switch it between the guns. looking for an inexpensive scope (can get this under 80$) and was wondering if anyone had used it or knows anything about it. would like to get something in the 3-9 (definately like the 2.5-10 option). to use at the range and do some hunting with.

My vote would go to the Cabale's Pine ridge models. I've put a bunch of the 2 by 7's on various rifles and they have a great return policy if you have any trouble with them at all. Check them out at Cabela's web site. They start at 69 bucks and are bright and clear and have easy to use adjustments.

Woodsman: Go to this site http://www.crab.com/~kmarsh/scope.html and check out info on scopes. This may help you decide what is best for you. Happy shooting !

I have a bunch of different scopes on rifles. I've a new BSA and one of the best is an old Japanese Tasco 8 by 32 1/8 inch dot fine cross hairs scope that I bought for 75 bucks at a pawn shop a few years ago.
It's been on most of my rifles for accuracy testing. From 8mm Rem Mags to 22 long rifles I use it to wring out how accurate new rifles are and every spring it goes on one of the varmint rifles for ground squirrel season. Here it is on the CZ Varmint 204 Ruger.

I can't tell you about the newer Tasco's, but with modern production methods many of the new scopes are indeed very good compared to scope technology from the late 60's and 70's. This is a 6 by 24 BSA mil dot illuminated reticle on a Rem 700 VLS 243.

If you have enough budget then my first choice would be one of the Leupold Riflemen scopes that Wally world sells, but mostly my budget doesn't go for the 200 dollar range of scopes so I look to less expensive alternatives. I've several Weaver's, Simmons, BSA's and others that though are not the optics Leupolds and some of the other high dollar scopes are have me out shooting instead of watching folks on the outdoor channel hunting. This is a Simmons AETEC 2.8 to 10 and there's one on both an 8mm Rem Mag and my 280 Remington Mountain Rifle. This is one of the best optics I've used in the last 20 years.

I say if it looks good when you try it out, then go for it. If not take a look at the Cabela's Pine Ridge models, Cabela's has a wonderful warrentee policy if something breaks.
Here's a Simmons 3 by 9 by 50 bottom end model that I paid 25 bucks for from a friend. It's on the CZ Varmint 204 for winter coyote calling and is doing nickel sized groups with that gun off the sitdown bipod.
