Hi All,
I've just got a new rifle, a Baikal single shot rifle in .223.
I'm wondering if anyone knows what the twist rate is for this rifle in 223?
I'm about to start reloading for it, and i'd love to know what the twist rate is.
Thanks alot,
Andrew

Remington sells these as the SPR-18, but they don't list the twist either. Sorry.

Put a cleaning rod wearing a plug type jag with a tight patch down the bore to before it emerges from the muzzle... hash mark the rod level with the breech... slowly remove until the hash mark makes one revolution... messure the distance from the breech to the hash mark... 1 turn in X inches.

Thanks for that. I'll check out Remington's website, they may know. I've tried emailing Baikal et al., but with no response.

Drew: I called Remington about that very thing. Duh to me. I forgot to write it down. I'm fairly certain it is 1 x 12. I'll call them again to make sure. I was really interested in the SPR18 in .223 and was comparing to H&R/NEF singles. Didn't like either one with a scope on them. It comes back over the hammer to the point where you can't get your thumb on it to cock it. They had to put some kind of a mickey mouse thing on the side of the hammer to be able to get the thumb in there. I'm going with the Remmy also. One of my local stores checked with their supplier a few days back to see if they were available. There were three. I went back to order one and they were all gone. My store had to find another supplier. Was told that they are selling fast. Should have mine this week,,,,,then look out coyotey. If you haven't decided on what scope, if any, you are going to use, Rem told me BKL rings are good as well as Warne. I live just down the road a couple of miles from Warne so I went in to see if they would sell directly to me. Brownell's have an exclusive on that particular ring for that model. I'm thinking BKL with an offset to get the scope forward for some eye relief. We'll see when it gets here. Will be anxious to hear how it shoots for you. Oh, when I talked to the guy at Rem, he said he also has one and really likes it. Said soon there will also be a .243 in his rack. Happy shooting !

Thanks Model 99, If you can get a chance to let me know for sure, I'd appreciate it. I was hoping it would be 1 in 10" twist as I sometimes like using heavy projectiles in .223.
I had no idea that Remington was selling these Baikal single shots under a different name. I just checked out their website and looked at the SPR-18 manual. The last page confirmed it was manufactered by Baikal IZH. We don't get any option of fancy nickel plated receiver down here in Oz!
I haven't put any thought in to scopes yet, I've got several lying about the place. The one I'll probably use is an elcheapo nikko stirling gold crown 3-9x42, it came with rings and mount that will fit on the Baikal's dovetail.
It would be nice to get a good scope though, have you any suggestions for a scope?
I get the odd thing from Brownell's, I'll check out the BKL rings you mentioned.
I haven't fired the rifle yet, I'm looking forward to giving it a go.
Thanks,
Andrew

As light recoiling as the 223 is even in these little 6.5 pound single shots the nikko should work fine if you can see thru it ok. I'm shooting an inexpensive Simmons on my CZ 527 204 Varmint and it's holding up well and shooting nickel sized groups. Nicer glass is always good though.
If your looking for good inexpensive glass I've had really good luck with Cabela's Pine Ridge scopes and their 2 by 7 starts at $70 US.

I got an email response from remington, Yes, it is a 1 in 12" twist.
Thanks for your help,
Andrew
