I've seen this in a few threads but haven't seen an explanation. What happens to stainless in the cold and at what temp does it become a problem? Thanks

Now, there's a topic that I've never heard of or even considered being a problem. Will be interesting to see the comments.

It's no secret that some steels get brittle at low temperatures. I don't know how bad stainless barrel steel is, but Krieger doesn't recommend it. There's links in my post in this thread.

Of course, kdub is more concerned about barrels melting in the Arizona summer. :p

Tikka had a major problem with this about 3 or 4 years ago, they were fine until about 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit, then a few of them split into a rather neat banana peel shape.

Of course, not all stainless steel is like that, and Tikka has corrected the problem, but it can and does happen.
