I have a new Marlin 1895 45/70 so far I have just added a Williams rear peep and a nice new sling. I would like to know if it is possible to remove the mag tube and tap the reciever and thread the tube so that I did not have to use the dove tail that way I could bed the stock and have a free floating barrel? The other reason I want to bed the stock is to protect against mositure as the stock is wood.

Not sure about your bedding idea but i have sealed my levers wood on the inside with tung oil.

Win 94...I see your from Alberta, I just got home from Wainwright Alberta. As far as the bedding thing goes, I want to do it more so to seal the wood, but if I can seal the wood and improve the rifles ability to shoot than right no.

while I make sure my bolt action rifles have free floated barrels, not so sure it's needed on the 45/70
I got a guide gun a few weeks ago and 3 different factory loads all do a 1" group at 100 yards and the handloads I started working on are doing the same, rounds touching at 50 and 1" at 100
that's with a scout scope setup, probably a bit tighter with a higher power scope...
