Yesterday, I picked up an unfired reproduction 1817 Harpers Ferry .69 caliber musket that looks exactly like a Charleville. It had been sitting in a gun shop for several years. A reproduction Charleville lists for over $1,400.00 today. I got the Harpers Ferry for about half that price with the box, video, bayonet and manual. I always wanted one of these. Take care...

You probably have a reproduction of the model 1816 US flintlock musket, made by both Springfield and Harper's Ferry during the period 1816 -1844. It had a 69 cal 42 inch round barrel secured by three barrel bands. The date on the lockplate is the date of manufacture. Those stamped 1817 were the earliest model. With sight variations there was a type I, type II, and type III. There were also private contractors who manufactured this musket.

There was a model 1817 Harper's Ferry Musket, produced in very low quanties and extremely rare. It was similar to the model 1816, but with a 36 inch barrel with two bands. Most of the model 1817 Flintlock rifles (AKA "the Common Rifle") were 54 caliber, with a 36 inch rifled barrel. This is a real neat rifle with an oval iron patchbox. I wish there were repros.

Thanks for the update. This rifle has three barrel bands and is .69 caliber. So it looks like I have an 1816 reproduction. Take care,,,

Many people don't realize it, but these 1816 flintlock muskets also saw a lot of service in the Civil War. Many of them were altered to percussion. some had shallow rifling broached in the barrel and a long range rear sight installed on the barrel. One Contractor, Remington, installed a Maynard tape priming lock on the musket. some of these Civil War altered 1816 muskets are very rare, yet not terribly expensive - yet! Don't pass one up if it happens to find you.
