I have some 148 grain 38 special wad cutters that have a hollow base. Does anyone know of a mould that will cast these style of bullets. Also why do full wad cutters look like they are not lubed?

Many use a very light coating of dry lube simply because they are fired at really low velocities. I tumble lube my cast wadcutters with Lee's liquid alox, but they are not hollowbase. I don't know whom is making a hb wadcutter mold. I can't tell any accuracy differences between the commercial hollow base wadcutters and my solids. You might check out Lyman or RCBS molds. The problem with making a HB wadcutter is simular to making a hollowpoint mold, you can only cast one bullet at a time. Wadcutters because of their nature are used a bunch at a time and it's not time effective to make them.

Believe Bob is referring to the HBWC when he made this statement. There are lots of moulds available for .38 Special WC (solids) with multiple cavities for high production casting. I use the HBWC but all of them are swaged (almost pure lead and pressed to shape) made by commercial bullet companies. Have shot many solids too, and as Bob says do not find much difference in accuracy between them. I generally stock up on HBWCs when they go on sale. If you're going to cast for the .38, the WC and 158 gr. SWC bullets are very popular.

Kenny, how much casting are you going to do? and are you going to size and lube?
I have a single cavity 148gr wc with handles, that I don't use, it is strange, it has 4 lube grooves.

Other bullet moulds may vary in the number of lube grooves but 4 grooves is pretty standard with the cast lead .38 Spl. WC.

You're welcome Greg. Can see you are used to seeing bullets with 2 lube grooves. Most of my moulds are single groove 'cause I'm too lazy to check multiple grooves.:D
