I just bought a remington 770 in 30-06. i took apart the bolt to clean it and when i reassemble it i could not get it to go back in to the rifle. i think i may have assembled it the wrong way becuase the firing pin is sticking out. i tried to take the bolt apart again but now it seems to be stuck. any help would be great!

Boy what a problem. I'd check to see if there's a certified Remington maintenance center near you and have them take a look at the rifle. You don't want to damage an investment like that. I shoot Remingtons, but the 770 is one I've not had any experience with. Perhaps some of our members can help you out here.

I think your bolt is the same as the 700 uses. My first guess is that the firing pin is uncocked. There's a piece on the back end of the bolt about an inch long that has two lugs sticking out of it, front to back and 1/8" high. Look at the end of the bolt with the handle at the 4:30 o'clock position. If this piece with the little lugs is at the 6:00 o'clock, the firing pin is uncocked. To cock it, clamp the little lugs in a smooth jawed vice and lift the bolt handle to the 1:30 o'clock position.

I'd be inclined to agree with Jack, I've done the something similar with a Model 70 bolt, it is kind of a pain to fix, firing pin springs are strong

Jack has the right answer as I have done it a number of times and the first time I did it I took it back to the dealer and I think he had a chuckle. Jack would know him as he was a old gun dealer (Percy).

I dealt with Percy a bit, but that was a while back, all right. W.D. Stewart set me up for reloading back in 1968. Did you ever get out to Al Peterson's at Riverhurst?

I never dealt with Al, but I spent alot of time with W.D. and I have a couple of reloading manuals he gave me. He was real close friends with my uncle and my boss Harry Deugua. When Harry passed away I helped a bit with his collection and if I remember right he had over 10,000 rounds of reloaded centre fire ammunition.
He also had the sweetest pairs of 88s I ever saw 1 was in 243 & the other was in 308.
