havent been long on this forum, but can anyone tell me why there is SO many stickys and moved threads? Makes it hard to navigate thru to find an active thread as the entire first page has only a couple of threads on it?

The "Stickys" are posted for newcomers to read to understand how the board operates and provide generic information that keeps getting asked over and over by the newbies.

Threads are moved to the most appropiate forum for the subject matter so that the General Discussion forum doesn't get bogged down with everything under the sun. Folks should peruse the main directory prior to posting to find the best forum for their posts.

All this is explained in the Sticky's you question.

Which also proved that nobody ever reads them.

while I am new to this forum, I am active on many other forums, shooting, 4WD, fishing etc.
I havnt ever come across one that required 13 "stickys" and 21 "Moved" out of the first 50 threads?
Perhaps it does show, as previous reply mentions, that nobody reads them cos there are too many?
Given also that many of the moved are from members with many posts up there sleeves?

That's because some folks just don't take the time to look for a specific forum to post in. Its easier to dump it in General and let the Mod's sort it out.

As to too many Sticky's - we've given thought to cleaning some out, but then a member or members will request a specific topic be made into such. There's just no pleasing everyone all the time.

The Posting Problems sticky can go, as we haven't had a problem reported since the new software was installed. Gone. The HR 1022 thread is a year old, so that matter is probably done with, one way or the other. One of the American mods should look it over and delete it if it's served it's purpose.

If you want to see currently active threads, just click on New Posts (http://www.shootersforum.com/search.htm?do=getnew)at the top of the page or to to Today's Posts (http://www.shootersforum.com/search.htm?do=getdaily\) under Quick links. I have the Todays post link set as one of my homepage tabs for when I open up my browser.

I agree with MikeG, I'm a member of this and many other gun related forums. This site has way more "sticky" and "moved" posts than any other site that I'm aware of. I think this is a great site for information and I stop by often. But on the other hand, there must be a way to have a page dedicated to "stickies" and a way for posts to get directed to the proper section of the forum without beeing marked as "moved". I'm no website or computer wizard but I don't see this as a problem on other sites. And I fail to see why it is here......Later,B.

To go to the proper forum for a "moved" thread, merely click on the "moved" message and it will automatically take you directly to the new forum. No need to navigate.

Is there a way to move a thread without leaving the trail?

The new forum software let's us set an expiry time for the redirect. We're just not in the habit of using it yet. You know how hard it is ti teach an old dog new tricks. :D

May I speak as a newbie on this. I am amazed at the amount of information out there on this forum. As a long time volunteer, I am not volunteering to maintain it, so I won't gripe.

I think that perhaps an archive section may help. I REALLY appreciate the stuff that is sticky. I have to admit that this is my first venture into forums and did not know about the pages at the bottom of the last post until I did the Push it and see what happens.

I'm a moderator on another site and i'd like to chime in with a possible solution if I may.

We no longer leave redirects if someone posts a thread in the wrong forum. A redirect actually rewards the person that posted the thread in the wrong forum by giving them additional exposure to their thread. What we will do sometimes is shoot a pm to the thread starter that their thread was moved.

Either that or you can check the email notification box and the person will be automatically directed to the moved thread.

Food for thought. :)

Largin89, the default for paging back to older posts is set to 100 days, but you can set it right back to December 2000 in the box way down at the bottom of the page. The search function will dig way back too.

Good point, Ole. The only problem I see is that some members bookmark a post and might not find it if it's redirected afterwards. Some members only get logged in on weekends if that often. On the other hand, somebody was complaining about moved posts on another forum today and one of the mods pointed out that they could always be redirected to the great big bit bucket in the sky. Anyhow, we've just started using these expiring redirects, so we should test them out for a bit.
