I Own Two Browning B78's And Have Been Very Impressed With There Accuracy. One Is Chambered In 7mm Rem Mag And The Other In 6mm Rem. Both Maintain On A Regular Basis 1 Moa 3 Shots. I Have Worked Up Some Pet Loads For Both But It Appears They Both Like What I Throw At Them.

Anyone Else Have Experience With These Wonderful Firearms??

Sparky357, my 1978 High Wall is a .243 with the 26 inch heavy round barrel - absolutely love it. I’ve tinkered with a range of different powder volumes and seating depths for the following projectiles : Hornady 65, 75 & 87 V-Max, Hornady 95 Gr SST and Sierra Gameking 100 Gr SBT.

All loads were tested at the local 50m indoor rifle range using my improvised 24 kg ‘T’ shaped wooden rifle bench rest (with both a padded scissor jack assembly and rifle butt support) – except for the SST’s irregular pattern, I can group 3 shots into about 5/8 of an inch with the others. I’m not a keen long distance shooter (possibly 200m max on rabbits, hares, feral cats, foxes, pigs and goats) so the rifle’s plenty accurate for the intended game and distance.

Note, I’m relatively new to shooting a centrefire and would honestly pass myself off as being an ‘average’ shot – so in more experienced hands I’m sure my rifle would no doubt be noticeably more accurate. My only complaint with the rifle was its initial creepy heavy trigger – now professionally adjusted to a beautifully crisp 2 pound pull.

I share your passion – go the B78 !

I don't have a B-78, but I do have 3 of the follow-on 1885's. One of them, my Winchester 1885 Hunter in .270 WSM, is the most accurate rifle I think I've ever shot. With 90 gr Sierra varminter bullets and 68 gr. of IMR 4350, it will group right around 1/2 inch at 100 yards pretty consistently.

Here are some pictures of my 1885's. The first one is a Browning 1885 in .454, with some very stunning walnut. This rifle now wears a Williams receiver sight and a Lyman 20 globe front sight. This photo was taken by the seller I bought it from. Oil on the barrel makes it look mottled in the photo, but the bluing is actually in excellent shape.

The second photo is my Winchester 1885 BPCR rifle in .45-90. This photo shows the stock Marbles rear sight and a Lyman 17 front globe sight I first installed. It is now equipped with a Browning Vernier tang sight and a Lyman 20 front globe sight. I will probably be removing the tang sight shortly and installing a Williams receiver sight for general shooting and hunting, reserving the Vernier tang sight for long distance target shooting. I have also added a leather slip-on recoil pad to help absorb the rather significant recoil of heavier loads. :-)

The third photo is off Gunbroker.com of a Winchester 1885 High Wall Hunter. Mine is just like this one, but in .270 WSM and equipped with a Leupold VX-2 compact 2-7x33 scope.

Look just as sweet as the first set of pictures.

I will be hunting this coming deer season with the B78 in 6mm rem. I just can't wait for the season to get here.

Thanks Redpep for those additional pictures.
