Im new to the sight and I am sure this topic has been beat to death but what do you guys think is the best type of aftermarket (long eye relief, I guess) sights availible out there without breaking the bank.

I am doing mostly hog hunting on the ground in reasonably low light so holo, red dot or some other newfangled contraption?

I dont like the idea of side mounted scope.

I hate to do it do a classic like the 94 but this one has seen its share of Florida humidity and is pretty beat up, rust etc. I may have her parkerized or even dippen in that camo gunk.

I like the idea of having both eyes open so I can see if one of those tusky snorters comes flanking, aimin for my cash & prizes. Dump a mess of .45 acp in him if the .30/30 dont get the job done.

What are your thoughts?

Welcome to the forum.

Having shot a few hogs in low light, I would say that any scope at all is a significant advantage over open sights. And the better quality glass you can afford, the easier this is gonna be. Cheap is not going to be your friend in the long run.

Would say that for conventional scopes, the heaviest/thickest crosshairs you can get will be the way to go. When it's dark enough that the crosshairs disappear, then the scope isn't very useful anymore.

Haven't used red dots on rifles, so can't comment further.

Try tru-glo. I have no use for optics on a CQB type rifle. If you're figuring a hog might be trying to blow snot in your pocket, the only optics I would consider is a holosight or something similar. Ask around with your military friends and ask which sight they're using for CQB on their M-4's.

I f you don't want an off=set scope, try one of the scout mounts with a long eye relief scope or a red dot.

For open sights the firesights seem to be pretty handy, but like Mike I like optics. I use both scopes and red dot sights and both seem to work very well. Get into a good gunshop and look thru some.
