So I am thinking about converting my 1895G to a scout scope settup with ghost ring sights as a back up. Right now it has a bushnell 1.5-4.5 power scope on it and a sling. I tend to try to keep things simple but for some reason I like the look of the scout settup. Do you have any recomendations?

I enjoy the quick target aquisition of the scout set up plus its so well balanced with the scope over the barrel.

I don't think you can improve on what you have. I don't like the "scout" setup at all. I see no reason to use sights on a scoped rifle.

Just from my personal experience....
In a tree stand at first light on a grey overcast day, I'll take my bolt rifle with Bushnell 2.5X10 scope every time. Under those conditions the big scope allows me to see the game where my Burris 2.75 Scout Scope (on Marlin Outfitter) is still just dark. In anything greater than twilight the Scout scope sees just fine. When hunting on the ground out to 200 yards, the Scout scope is as good as the larger scope and when hunting when snap shots are needed, the Scout scope is a lot better.
It's not a totally fair comparision with the big objective scope to the little compact Scout scope but you don't get something for nothing. Of course the small variable you currently have mounted may be no better in poor light than the Scout Scope. I also like the way the Scout Scope mounts low over the barrel for a good fit to my face when shooting.
I know it's not much help but... If you like your current scope and hunt from a stand, keep what you've got. If you are looking for more speed and ability to move through the brush, consider the Scout scope.

I have a Leupold scout scope on my guide gun, I really like it.
I have compared it directly against a Vx1 1-4 shotgun scope looking under trees at night and see no real difference in light gathering ability, the Vx3 1.5-5 may, barely, barely have more clarity
a zeiss conquest 4.5-14x44 is better of course and the Swaroski 3-10x42 I just got today is even better
I REALLY like the scout scope on the lever action and can do 1" groups at 75 yards with it
some really like it, some don't
I was curious and had to try it and don't think I would ever scope a lever gun another way, of course, my intent for a lever gun is closer in stuff, I use a scoped bolt action when hunting out of stand and anticipating longer shots, the lever action is mainly used for close in hog hunting or walking/stalk hunting
give it a shot, worst case it may cost you 50-100 bucks if you decide you don't like it and have to sell it
definitely use a true scout scope if you want to get the best test

My 1895G is in a semi-scout configuration; XS Ghost Rings & Rail with a Bushnell Banner 6" ER Scope on Warner QD Rings. The scope stays on most of the time, but if I'm hunting thick stands of scrub oak, the scope goes in the backpack.
I don't acquire scope eye when shooting heavy loads (especially when playing at the range).
This set up is useful to me.

Put the ghost ring sights on it and look at it for half an hour then sight it in, then hunt with it once without the scope.

I was a skeptic about scout scopes for about 15 years but since I have tried them I love them.
They don't work really good for bench or varmints but for big game and big bores they are great.

I really like the scout setup on my 1895 (standard, not a guide). It is very fast with both eyes open on shots up to about 150yds. I don't shoot anything but paper beyond that range, so this is not a limitation for me.
My configuration is a Leupold 2.5x scout scope in QD rings on an XS mount rail with a Williams peep sight for backup. I have sighted the peep sights in at 100yds, but I hope I never have to use it.

My first scout.336 LTD. Just mounted yesterday. I need a skinner, and some quick release rings and I'm done. It might take some time to get used to the chaps, but until Ram Line gets off their duff and makes a camo stock for it this will have to do.
NcStar 4x32 illuminated on the suggestion of several scout owners that could not see the $$$$$$$$$ in a looopy.
It is quick to pick up squirrels in the yard and carries like a lever is supposed to. The IR is nice. This is my hog getter in the salt marsh.

Skip the scout scope. I would have to agree on the post about the grey overcast day, is going to make you wish you kept your old set up.

I put a scout setup on my 1894 in .357 and love it.

Thanks! I'm ready to get a pic of it laying on top of a hog like the .35 RC in my avitar!
