View Full Version : Hornaday New Dimension dies
I've never loaded pistol ammo before, and recently I bought a set of 45 ACP Hornaday New Dimension dies to use with my rockchucker. Now I'm considering one of the Lee turret presses, the Classic Turret in particular. Please excuse my woeful ignorance!
Question 1- Can I assume no case lubing is necessary with this die?
Question 2- What else would I need to load with a Lee turret press, with a Pro Disk powder measure? I'm thinking I'd need to buy one of their "powder-thru" expander dies in place of my neck expander die.

You don't need lube, but a whiff of Hornady One-Shot makes it much easier. I'm not sure about your 2nd question. I suspect you're right.

Welcome to the forum 72V. Rules are simple, be nice and join in.
If your dies are carbide as most modern pistol dies are then you won't need to lube the cases. I use one of Lee's little hand primeing tools to prime my cases with. I'm using the Pro-disk powder measure, but with lee dies so yes your going ot need the powder thru expander die. Probably cheaper just to get a lee carbide lee die set. I especially like the four die Lee sets that make crimping a separate step from seating.
The powder thru expander bells the cases and dumps the powder at the same time. It's case activated so won't dump unless there is a case in the die. Great little setup.
I have one of the old three hole turret presses and it's been stuffing pistol and revolver ammo for lots of years. I just recently added a Pro Disk powder measure, boy is it great. Here's the way my bench is set up.

Well worth the price of the die since you will be using the Pro Disk powder measure anyway. Could use the Hornady expander die, however, you will have to charge cases as a separate operation. Why not expand and charge cases at the same time.
Thanks for the responses and answers to my questions.
Although I really like the Hornaday seating die, I think I'll be buying Lee Deluxe pistol die sets from now on if they come with that special pour-through expander die. What has got me thinking of "going turret" is this article.
