Probably would help if we knew what area your going to be in. The West covers lots of square miles. I live in Northern Idaho and folks are fishing for steelhead on the Clearwater right now. Sea run rainbow trout (steelhead) up to 25 pounds and 4 feet long can be a real thrill on a fly rod. Get a drift boat and guide at Orofino (Riverside) and go for it.

Well, It's definitely not in the streams and reservoirs of Western Montana. I would got to Idaho or someplace else. NO NO just kidding!! If I was gonna go look for nice peaceful Trout fishing I would head for Ennis, Mt. Fish Ennis lake and then fish the river on down into Yellowstone.

Sweet Grass Creek When my daughter & sil moved to Absarokee, MT my daughter taught her husband how to clean fish(I taught her well). There are lots of productive streams and lakes that my sil introduced me to in the beartooths where California made power bait worked great,I also used zero & double zero mepps spinners and fly fished. He found a lake after we left that had 5# cutthroats & a feeder stream loaded with smaller cuts.If we ever get back to the area we're going cut fishing.
