Well, I have 2 weaknesses......Very well designed machines, and Machines that are older than I am.... and when I find both, well, they just get up and walk to the car for me.

Bought a well used 94, sn#45549xx (shows a 1977) at a local trader shop Friday. Blueing off both sides of the receiver, the obvious edges on the muzzle end, and the open top of the barrel (mostly on one side....odd to me) and most of the other "high spots" that lend to rubbing off. Still, seemed worth $125 to me. This is my first lever action. The rest are, almost exclusively, military rifles.

Cleaned the bore when i got home.....looks VERY good, imho. The screws on both of the barrel bands are in rough shape....but turnable. (Should I go ahead and replace them? )
Is it normal that the lower band screw have a rottenly shallow groove? I've got hollow ground drivers, but this thing is insane.

I haven't gone down into the action yet, as I don't have any drifts at home, and it looks like there are a couple of pins I'll have to coax out.

Does anyone have a location for a good exploded view, maybe a good walkthrough on teardown and inspection? I did grab a box of cartridges last night, and checked the cycling, everything is fine and smooth. Anything else I need to look out for?
Suggestions? Tips?

Thanks much,
Byron

Congratulations on your new gun,and welcome to the Forum;it's a friendly place.
The Numrich Arms catalog has diagrams of both old (pre 1964) and new Win '94 s.

I'll ad my welcome to Franks odiekokie, this is a great place to talk about guns and hunting.

Brownell's offers several good books on tearing down and reassembling firearm. Look on their website or better yet order a five buck catalog. The website can be a pita to get around in and you'll get your catalog purchase price back on your first order. Try some of their Oxpho-blue to restore the worn bluing. The old Win 94 is kinda a complecated mechinism and I'd sure recommend you get one.

Bob's comments are right on the button. That is exactly what I would suggest.

Thanks all! I just got done looking through that site, I was right with him when I got down all the way through the tube mag. We went out and put a few rounds downrange earlier, Wife loves it, and I do too. Recoil is pronounced but civilized. All else seems in order. Do y'all think it's necessary that I go into the action? From what I can "see" it looks reasonably clean.

Next thing I think I want to get into reloading.....light loads to make for easy fun shooting. Another rifle to wear completely out (like my poor old 552 Speedmaster Remington that finally ceased to function after about 14k rounds)

*Edit*
Ok, i did it anyway, and i must say, looks were deceiving, that thing was some kinda dirty...i've seen worse, but not on one of mine......glad i did it. And everything is back togather and in good order. Great site you sent me to Mr. Monteith. Thanks!

Will Oxpho-Blue work on those post-64 cast recievers. Everyone I've seen that had been through any attempt to reblue had turned purple(plum, as sellers refer to it)
