A guy I met saw bear sign in an area so he brought a jar of peanutbutter with him putting dabs on several saplings then checked to see if it had been removed a day or so later, then coated the trees again & waited out of sight to see if any bear appeared,it did and he shot it.In NYS I knew of a guy who took vegie trimmings, old apples, etc and dropped them off under a tree in the alps come deer season he always got his deer at dawn on opening day.

I watched an outdoor show on TV about canadian game dept officers trying to determine if bears were in the area by puncturing a can of sardines & wiring to branches of a small tree so it dripped the oily fish. They left it & when they returned the can wasn't it the tree it was on the ground completely shredded by bears. To see what attractants are used in states where baiting is legal go to www.bearscents.com. (http://www.bearscents.com.). I drove up to a blocked forest service road one fall and discovered a huge pile of stinking & rotting steelhead and salmon carcasses probably dropped there by locals to lure bears in even though it wasn't legal in california couldn't cite anyone as no one was in the area .
