Was out cleaning my Winchester Model 1894 (saddle ring) 30-30, Serial # 839***. I found two numbers stamped into the stock right behind the cocking lever. They are one on top of the other running towards the butt of the rifle. The numbers are a 3 followed by a 1. Never noticed before, anyone know what these #'s are ?
Thanks....

Do you mean that they are stamped on the stock in back of the lower tang? Or do you mean that they are stamped under the lower tang? ( You must remove the stock to see them).
Under the tang (inside) they would be assembly or inspectors numbers, on the outside of the stock, they would be agency or dept. numbers such as law enforcement, security agency, club, or ranch property number.

These two numbers are on the outside, bottom of the stock, right behind the cocking lever.
Again, one below the other (not side by side). A 3 and a 1.....

The location as you describe would not be factory numbers, so it would be just a guess as to their origin. probably a department or agency control number. Police dept, Railroad, security agency or most anything.

Thanks for your time....
Are there any marks other than Winchester's proof mark on top of the receiver?

I would like to know the answer to that one, too. It's in the right serial number range!
