What's a good bullet for wild boar? I'll be using the .257 Roberts. I load this cartridge with 100 grain Sierra Pro Hunters at present, but am not sure if they'll do the job on a boar. Any opinions or advice? Thanks.

As long as you put one behind his ear, any bullet will work. If your going to attempt to get past his shield (shoulder), you be better off with a Nosler Partition or a bonded bullet. If you stay with the Sierra and want to shoot for the vitals, try to get a "quartering away" shot. That way you can slide the bullet behind the shield to get to the boiler room.

Great cartridge, by the way;) .

It depends on the size of the boar!
I have always had great luck w/ these! http://www.sierrabullets.com/index.cfm?section=bullets&page=bc&stock_num=1640&bullettype=0

Not the same caliber mind you, but the bullet is VG and accurate. Jim

I am going on a Eurasian wild boar hunt in April, I am going to take my 284 winchester, I am currently working up a load using Barnes 140 gr ttsx bullets.

I've punched the lights out on a few using a .257 Roberts with both the Rem 100gr. Core-Lokt, and also the discontinued 100gr. Nosler Solid Base. Both have worked a lot better than I expected and my biggest pig (275 lbs.) went down to a Solid Base.

It seems to me that you get a little better performance with the Roberts than you would expect, because you aren't driving them as fast as say a .25-06.

Certainly, you can't go wrong with a good bullet like a Partition or an X. But I've had really good results with those two mentioned above.

Killing pigs (and finding them later), in my experience, depends more on knowing pig anatomy than what you are shooting. Their lungs are smaller than a deer's and farther forward. Try to break a shoulder if you can.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
