A few years ago, when the Combined Tech bullets first came out I bought a bunch of them but I was told by several reloaders that moly coated bullets were bad for stainless barrels. Recently I've been looking in several forums and haven't seen this addressed anywhere. I had never questioned this info but now that they've been around for quite a while I'm wondering if this information is accurate.
With the cost of reloading components going through the roof and having a couple hundred older Combined Technology Ballistic Silvertip bullets in 30 Cal. and my only 30 Cal rifle is stainless.....should I use them:confused:

I simply don't believe that. Barrel steel is much harder than the brass used in bullet jackets and Moly is simply a lubricant. I just don't see how it could hurt a steel barrel be in stainless or standard barrel steel.
I'm not a big moly kind of guy, tried it and found that it's only claim to fame is longer times between cleaning and having to use a little more powder to get the same velocity as uncoated bullets.
Frankly I'd just shoot them and not worry about them. I haven't seen any information that it will hurt a stainless steel barrel. If you want a good second opinion give Brownell's tech center an email and ask them. They sell lots of barrels and if there were any failures from using moly in any of their barrels they would probably know.

i'd shoot em and not worry about it. actually the lubalox coating isn't actually moly anyway. steel wool will take it right off and if i remember correctly wiping the bullets with acetone will do it also.
Have fun shooting them up! You're not going to hurt that ss barrel.

Thanks guys!!
I'd been told there was a chemical reaction between the moly and the stainless. It didn't make sense but I liked the way the rifle shoots so well I wasn't willing to take a chance.
Cool....a couple hun'erd more WSM's for a reasonable price. I saw where these go for well over $2 a round now.....
Update;
I called Brownells, like Bob from Idaho suggested.....the tech laughed....I'm gonna be shooting them shortly....heh, heh.....

I own several SS bbl'ed weapons that have seen nothing but moly slide thru them. The bbl's have also been treated with moly paste(Lyman).
One is a Browning Stainless Stalker,chambered in 7mag. I have had this weapon for 18 years and it has seen nothing but moly coated 115's, moly coated 140's,and moly coated 175's. It will still hold MOA @ 300+yds.
I also say.....shoot 'em up. -----pruhdlr
