Hi,

Has anyone had experience using the 62 grain Barnes varmint grenades in the .240 wby magnum. My friend has given me a heap of projectiles. What powder combination would be most suitable for these projectiles? Does anyone know of websites which give reliable reloading information?

Thanks

Best to check the Barnes manual for loading their bullets. I havn't checked to see if they give any loading data on their website, but that would be worth a check.

I've had pretty good results with H414 and light bullets in the 243, My Speer manual recommends a starting load of 52 grains of H414 and a top load with 56 grains for a 75 grain bullet in the 240 Weatherby Mag. That might be a good starting point for the 62 grainer.

Im in Australia, and unfortunately that stuff is hard to get. Our common powder is manufactured by a company called ADI. They send some of their powder to the U.S but its under a different name, I dont recall what it is. I have taken a load from their manual, there is a 1 grain difference between loads for 60 & 75 gn projectiles. Thanks for the input.

Red:

Did the movie "Quigley" make the Sharps rifle popular down there?

Red85 - Your Aussie AR2209 is pretty close to Hodgdon H414 in burn rate.

Hodgdon is the US brand that ADI makes powder for.

In regards to Quigley, the Sharps rifle isnt very popular here. If it is, then I havent noticed it. There are a few guys here that still use the traditional black powder rifles though. And for AR2209, I can't find a load for it in the .240. I am using another powder called AR2213SC, which is slower burning than AR2209.

If you can get the Vihtavouri powders, I've settled on N160 for my 6mm Remington Ackley, which is pretty close in powder capacity to the 240 Wby.

I don't have a 60gr bullet load for it; but my rifle handles 54gr N160 with a 70gr Speer TNT bullet for 3,900 fps. I'm sure the Viht. manual has 60 gr loads for your cartridge.

N160 seems to be just the right burning weight for mid-weight bullets in the large cases in .243 caliber.
