recently tried attaching a photograph while replying to a thread.
prompted that the file was too big, 1.3 mb. and only allowed 100kb. i must be doing something wrong as i see many photos larger than 100kb posted.
suggestions?

Put your photo's in Photobucket and then attach them from there. That's what I do. Resize them to 72 bit size and not over 7.5 inches to place in Photobucket seems to work pretty well.

Richard,
Look at the stickies in the General forum. One of them is on how to put up photos. Post #26 on this page (http://shootersforum.com/showthread.htm?t=34239&page=2) has the most recently posted set of instructions in PDF form. I am going to clear out that sticky and put only a still more recent version up, which has a few more pointers in it for clarification.

The 100 kb limit applies to pics uploaded to the Beartooth server. You can post larger pics by storing them on Photobucket and linking to them.

Recently, I have posted some pics from photobucket, and I've used the same process as I had used before when resizing, selecting the "message board" size, yet these recent photos slightly exceed the page size in the forum. I notice that photobucket has a new look to their site, so I suspect the change is on their end, rather than any changes that have been made to the forum software. I guess I'll have to select the next smallest size selection in photobucket in the future.

I believe Photobucket used to fix image size or limit it. Generally, you want, as I say in the .PDF file in the sticky, to limit width to 800 pixels. If you go to Image Shack instead of Photobucket, you will find on the upload page an option to resize the image during upload. You can specify what size you want there, rather than having to have your own software for resizing.

Thx Nick, and I did read your excellent "how-to" in the sticky, and I'll try one of your methods, or just select the smaller choice in photobucket and see how it comes out. Photobucket has "preset sizes" to choose from, and the one I've been using is the 640x480 "message board" size, which should be plenty small, with room to spare based on your width limit of 800. Yet - at least on my screen - it now exceeds the width and scrolling is necessary to see the whole thing, and the text message....a pain. This size selection did not exceed the screen size in the past. Photobucket does allow entry of sizes other than the preset sizes, so I might try that as well.
The photos that I'm talking about were in my latest post in the "Weather" thread (My Neck of the Woods), so I'm curious if this same post for others exceeds their screen size (I realize monitor size is a factor here too)?
Shawn, I just looked at the "weather" pictures and they are 639 wide. I think that 640 about right for a "standard width" My monitor is 12" wide and about 15" diagonal. I guess there are still some people using smaller ones.
Keep in mind that if you post an oversize picture and go back to photobucket and reduce it the change might not show up immediately here. The old version is getting cached somewhere, either on the users computer or a server somewhere.

Your pictures are coming out fine for me. I'm running 800x600 screen size and your pictures are 639x478. They fit in fine. What screen size and browser are you using?

Thx Ken & Jack. My screen is same size as Ken's - 12" W x 15" diagonal, on an iMac, if that makes any difference. Yet, the pic is still slightly oversize. I'm using Firefox for the browser. I'll just put in a slightly smaller custom size when I resize in photobucket from now on, until I get the size that fits right. Thx.

Just crop'em, siz'em and upload'em. Use IrfanView and life is easy. Free download off net.

Shawn,
It's not your screen size in inches, but the resolution in pixels. Most monitors that are flat screen can handle a number of them up to the flat screen pixel size, and most analog monitors are only limited to how small you are comfortable looking at things. It does sound like your resolution shifted on you. Do your desktop icons look any bigger? I only know how to change resolution on a Windows machine. You might try looking at your iMac's help files.

As Nick said, check your screen resolution. 800x600 refers to the pixel count, or points of light across the screen. 800 horizontal, 600 vertical. I'm not familiar with Macs, but Windows defaults to it's minimum 640x480 size if it throws a conniption, which makes the letters big, but they're pretty crowded if they don't run of the sides. One thing to note. Your video hardware might have settings your monitor can't handle. 800x600 is pretty safe.

If using IE 7, you can use Ctrl - to make the stuff in the window smaller in 10% increments on your screen to make what appears in the window smaller so you do not have to scroll back and forth then use Ctrl + to get it back to normal size or use the zoom level control in the bottom right corner of the screen. I do not use Firefox so I do not know what kind of zoom feature it has. Unfortunately, it (zoom) also affects text size so using that method may be hard on old guy eyes.

Thx everyone. Thus far, I've determined that it's something in the settings of the iMac 'puter, because I looked at the same pics in the Weather thread on the 'puter at work, and everything fit just fine (pic was about 3/4 the width of the normal thread text width). I'm fairly computer-stupid, so haven't found where to alter those settings yet (and I've looked), nor how many pixels this screen has. But narrowing it down to where the problem is.
