What is the best alloy to use with gas checks as far as making bullets
for my rifles using a .308 dia bullet? I have made them with wheel weights but
would like to be able to push them a bit faster..Thanks

How fast do you want them? I use water quenched WW, gas checked, to 2100 fps.

i am using 4% tin and6% antimony g/c at 2250 8 ft from bbl.
why this mix? easy to make just buy commercial and add 2% more tin,
little better than lyman #2 and itis consistent unlike water dropping
if you want harder , air cool your ww , size and then heat treat then lube.

How about that stuff, they call hardball....I can get that from Midway,if I want to go that route..And then add the gas checks as well...And will the Lee alox lube work or should I be using a different lube in my Lyman sized press...

How fast do you want to push what bullet? Midway says their hardball (2/6/92) is about BHN 16 but I wouldn't be surprised if it were as low as about 14 (since there is no mention of arsenic.) Still might want to quench.
If I used Liquid Alox I'd still fill the lube grooves with NRA 50/50 or Felix'sWorldFamousLube.

I shoot quenched WW without gas check to 1900 FPS- no leading at all, ALOX and my lube!! With gas checks I'm sure I could push these as fast as I wanted. Lead bullets don't need to going to fast anyway if you push them to 2600-2800 your not loosing much over a jacketed bullet! Anything over 3000 fps your bullet will probably fall apart!

that 2/6/92 will work i use that
and add the tin antimony is not condusive to holding a boolit together and the extra tin
helps with the bonding of ingredients [ i beilieve it also helps keep voids down inside the boolit]
you may get by with the alox in two coats, or hard lube alone [what ii do] or hard lube and alox
i may try this if i were trying for extreme velocity ,
or was having a bad leading problem
leading is an indicator of what is happening with your rifle where it is how much and at what PRESSURE
dont expect miracles but dont settle for less than what you want

Thank you all for the info...I went and ordered a sizing die for my lyman luber...
I am not to keen on the lee alox lube unless it is one of their tumble lube
bullets, that are designed for that stuff...I plan on casting some bullets today
if I get the chance to...Thanks again....Oh,I think I am going to use the wheel
weights for now,I have 3 or 4 buckets of them here......John

Wheelweights will server you well. You can add a couple of percent of one of the lead-free plumbing solders (they are almost all tin) to help fill the mold better and look a little shinier.
I am sorry to see that someone is marketing a casting alloy as "hardball". The term properly refers to jacketed round nose .45 ACP ammunition, and is used specifically to distinguish it from cast bullet loads (softball) in bullseye matches. The misuse of the term to refer to the material composition of its opposite will just cause confusion. Besides, at BHN 16, it is nowhere near as hard as linotype or the various hard babbits, much less that of the copper jacket on real hardball.
