Hello to all;

Well like many others, who live in the state of Indiana, I to just purchased a .357 Magnum Rifle.
My choice was the one by; Interarms. A model 92 SRC. ( Side Ring Carbine ) .38 Special / .357 Magnum W/ 20" barrel, with Nickle plated receiver, Factory Engraving and made in Brazil.
It was NIB, with warranty card, owners manual, and loaded with as much of the manufactures cosmoline that these Brazilians could smuggle out of the country at the time.
This is NOT one of the new PUMA'S shipped by Legacy Arms. This weapon was manufactured approximately 30 years ago in the mid to late 70's. It's in pristine condition, and it's never been fired.
The reason I purchased this weapon is because NEW for Jan. 2008 Indiana hunters can
now deer hunt useing a .357 rifle as long as bullet & cartridge does not exceed 1.625" (Any disagreements to what I'm reading right off the card please call DNR at: 1-756-447-9582).
Soooooooo, I purchased this rifle with grandeur dreams of bagging a 220 LB. buck this year.......... as long as it's within 80 to 100 yards.

Not to mention the price was right in line to what I found in the rear of my sofa.

Now I know that it's not an original Winchester or Marlin with the Serial Numbers 0000000001 etched on it.
And I know that I didn't get to pay $176,280.00 (Record High Bid for One ). at an auction.
However, I do know that I'm now the proud owner of a brand new (never been fired) rifle that I didn't have to empty my savings account for or refinance my home for.
And when I pull the trigger, I'm sure the game I'm shooting won't know if it's being shot by a Winchester, Marlin, Henry, Browning, Savage, Ruger, or a Uberti.


Because As They Say; .......... "Dead Is Dead".


Now, with that out of the way.

The reason I'm writing is to find out as much information from any one who has a ~ LEVER ACTION RIFLE WITH A SCOPE MOUNTED ON IT. ~

( And before I get all the lectures about a scope being mounted on a lever action rifle.
I'll just say; "It's not because I want to, It's because of an eye condition, I have to". )

I'm looking for information from anyone, on the type of Mount, Rings, and Scope along with it's power that you used on your lever action rifle and if you are, or are not satisfied with your decision on the magnification of your scope.
I've been told to stay with a 2 x fixed scope for mine. Just seems kind of low, like what's the point of using a scope.

Any information you can give would and will be appreciated.

Although I do not use a scope on a Rossi, about the only mount I know of for one has recently been announced by the Puma importer, Legacy Sports, International. Check their website.

I put a scope on my Marlin 1895, just to try it out. I used a 2.5X Weaver that I had, and it worked quite well. I would suggest that is the power range you should consider, as it will provide you with good aiming, and is good enough for any ranges that you will shoot with your .357.
I took the scope off, after playing with it for a bit, because it really changed the handling of the rifle.
For your Rossi, you may have to go to the old side mount (used to be made by Williams), or a long eye relief mounted on the barrel. You cannot put anything over the receiver because of the way the cartridges are ejected.
That is the reason for the mention of the Marlin.

Well... As a fellow who shot 2 does on Dunes State Park with his Rossi .357 all I can say is:

You've got a great gun that works wonders out to 100yds with the right ammunition... But why do you want a scope on a sub-100yd gun?

I also took a Buck at 110yds with the same gun, but it is NOT somthing I would recommend. With a Scope most people are far too likely to outshoot the cartridge.

I would suggest getting a good reciever mount Peep sight with an adjustable aperature so you can dial from "ghost ring" to tiny peep at will.

Not to rain on your parade , but a Marlin would be much easier to mount a scope .

I Have a scope on a Marlin .44 Mag .

I also have a Rossie / Legacy Sports International in .45 LC that I would not even try to mount a scope on .

Same for the Winny M 1892 that I was given ( converted to .357 Mag ) .

But , you may find it easier to use some kind of scout mount , to replace the rear sight , that you can use with a hand gun scope ?

Now that we got all the shoulda, woulda', coulda' that you DIDN'T want out of the way.....
If you want to scope your Puma, you have 2 options. You can mount a long eye relief (pistol) scope out on the barrel. Or, you can have a side mount made for it to mount the scope to one side or the other of the receiver . Reason being, your M92 clone ejects the empties straight up and any scope mounted at short eye relief and over the bore would interfere with ejection. I have owned and shot several M94 and a couple of 92's with side mounts, and they take some getting used to, but it was an accepted practice on a LOT of guns for many years, especially lever guns and top ejecting autos (like the M1 Garand). Personally I prefer the scout type mount. I would suggest a good quality LER variable scope like a 2X to 7x, or even a 1½X to 4X. But you could also opt for a "dot" type electronic sight with no magnification.
Do a Google on scope mounting for a 92 winchester. I know there is at least one company making a good solid mount that makes use of the rear sight dove tail slot and a couple of screws (requires drilling and tapping of the barrel) but I can't recall the name.
Congratulations on your purchase! And since its your gun, do whatever you want to it! I find that the guys who grouse about "ruining a fine rifle" are the same ones who, if you want to sell it, will low ball you anyway.

Just another thought for you....I have used a Rossi in .44 Mag for years as a brush gun, and find it is a great little rifle for out to 100 yards. I'm also blind as a bat, over 65 years old, and have a hard time seeing the sights. The post above recommending a peep sight is GOOD advice! I mounted an old tang sight on my Rossi, with a large Ghost Ring rear, and it works wonders. Not a dial-in like a scope, but it works, and doesn't screw up the balance of the little rifles. Just a thought.

It's especially good with a Merit Adjustable Aperature on it.

If you intended to mount a scope , a Marlin would have been much more user friendly ....... :-(

Some of the " best " buys are the entry Burris Full Field II and Leupold (sp) VX-I , 3 x 9 x 40 scopes . Much greater volume - economy of scale . If you wish low power , simply turn the thing down to 3 x .

If you can afford to spend more , buy all means , do so .

I am trying to break myself from the habit of buying " cheap " scopes . Most that I have used have had repeatability problems . :-(

It's especially good with a Merit Adjustable Aperature on it.

That is just what my 44mag Rossi looks like. If I ever get it back from LSI I will post a pic. I would love to have a 357 with the same set up but until I get my 44 back it will have to wait.
